McCarthy Admits Transfer Frustrations
Tuesday, 28th Jul 2015 23:09

Boss Mick McCarthy says the Blues’ lack of new additions isn’t down a lack of trying. The Town manager says he’s tried to do deals but so far without landing his targets.

Asked whether he expects to have any new signings in before Saturday’s friendly at home to Utrecht, he said: “Possibly we’re still trying, but unfortunately it’s not happening at the minute.

“We keep looking and keep spinning plates and something will drop I’m sure at some stage.”

He says bids have been rejected in some cases: “Yes, we just can’t get them done.

"Not because we’re not trying to do them or get them in, everybody should understand that. We are trying to do deals and it’s just not happening at the moment.”

The Town boss, who said last week he is looking for two or three further signings, added: “We are trying to do things and trying to make sure they’re the right things and that’s not always easy.”

He says having recently received a big fee, as the Blues did for Tyrone Mings from Bournemouth, isn’t always helpful to a buying club: “I think that’s part of it, they see we’ve suddenly got £8 million in, but we’ll still be adhering to Financial Fair Play and within the rules. If they’re the right deals, Marcus will do them, no question about that.”

Meanwhile, he says he’d like to send some of his other young players out on loan with 18-year-old defender Matt Clarke set to join Portsmouth: “Perhaps, if somebody wants them.

“If we can get them out playing for league clubs, it’ll be better than playing in the U21s. Clarkey will go and maybe somebody else.”

IF we get to the Premier.

I wouldn't gamble £20m of my cash for a potential £100m. And Evans won't see as much of that as people think, as wages will go up, infrastructure will need updating.

I'm just pleased we have McCarthy and Evans running this club.

People suggesting we should ignore FFP seem to think Evans has this magical endless pot of money. I'm suggesting Evans isn't as wealthy as some think and is putting a substantial proportion of his wealth into our club each year with no return as yet.

I want to see a signing or two as much as anyone else; in particular, we seem to be one defender short.

However, bringing in the wrong player or overpaying for the right one just in order to please people would both be disasters.

I'm afraid that we just have to trust MM and the Board and hope.

we need no less than two additions, as the more time goes by, and supposed delay after delay.. If we end up with one fee paid player, he may have a silly and unneeded burden on his back..

I wonder who we're trying to bring in?..Prem players on loan don't interest me tbh.

Would be more than happy with bringing in 3 or 4 youngish players from leagues 1 & 2 along the lines of Cresswell & Sears.

Surely those would be in our price range?

Why is everyone so in love with Jonny Williams? Yes, he's a good player when he's fit. But let's face it, he's NEVER fit. He'd be getting back to full fitness for 2 or 3 games then he'd get injured like he does every season. I'd prefer if we spent some money on someone who has a record of being fit and playing every game for whatever club they're at. I loved Jonny here as much as the next man but he's not reliable enough.

I thought the whole reason why Evans bought the Club was to get to the Premier. Not suggesting he'd get all his money back, but then again he could always sell a Premier club. No, more is now needed, we can't keep hoping Mick is going to pull a rabbit out of a hat every time. It's not to please some people, it's for promotion. As for the wage structure, it is probably precisely because we made the play offs that it is no longer competitive - and I'm not suggesting the Club has to up it to the stratospheric levels of Derby either.

I for one am pleased MM is looking long and hard for the right player. Would love to see two-three-four new strong players in, but they have to be the right players for us in every respect, otherwise I would rather we didn't bring anyone in.
I guess that is that can be the problem with some players.
As for negotiating with other clubs, I understand that other clubs think we will pay over the top for their players now that they see that we have sold Mings for 8m. Hope they will see won't and that it is take what we offer - or maybe a little more - rather than get nothing and be stuck with a dissatisfied player.

Jonathon Douglas, Brentford captain has been told by their new manager he is not going to play again! for the past 2 seasons he has been one of their best players! snap him up MM! he may be 33 but very experienced and he scores goals

Definitely need that creativity in midfield, but concerned about fitness issues for Williams. Think Fraser is a top signing on loan.

An out and out right back, and a decent goalkeeper as I'm not quite won over by either Bart or gerkin.

Why can't people forget Mings he was the main reason we didn't get to Wembley Imo he won't make 6 first team starts for Bournemouth before he's found out.
Williams good player always injured no good for us with our small squad

Jas0999 spot on with those comments. Coke an okay player but only that. We must improve the wafer thin squad especially defensively. MM has worked wonders and he's a shrewd judge of a player. Disappointing to miss out on Garbutt especially with Big Fat Joe lending us a hand.. be patient I suppose.

I doubt if there's a top business or businessman/woman in the country who hasn't taken a few calculated risks to get where they are. (like it or not, football these days is very much a business). We however seem to have become very risk adverse (with the possible exception of employing a certain Mr Keane!)

We must remember that virtually all of Micks signings were either not wanted by their club,or had been discarded and there for were free agents desperately seeking employment;plus the odd youngster from lower leagues.
He has until now not been competing often for better players who are still wanted by their clubs to a certain extent and/or wanted by other clubs;whereas in the past he has had little competition.
It is interesting that FFP has been mentioned again;but it would appear that Mr Evans is not prepared to pay sufficient either in wages or transfer fees to secure the decent players that Mick wants.I am sure it is not Mick that is the problem with the non signings.
Let us hope that in Micks language he doesn't get p..sed of and decides foxtrot Oscar!!!

@ Parham Blue, spot on! Totally agree.

We should never have sold Mings, money won't be spent or other clubs have all slapped high price tags. We are all frustrated Mick, scratching around for frees whilst Derby, Boro & others brazenly splash the cash! How come Forest have signed a crop of decent players on an embargo? WTF, does that actually mean???

Embargo in my book means NO-ONE, not even frees, not even youth. Totally hacked off with FFP.

What is the punishment for money bags QPR, points deduction? FFP? More like FFS!

There's two ways of looking at this. The first being that we've got a few million from the Mings transfer in the bank to spend on improving the squad with more high profile players than we've been used to in previous years. The second sees the money be reinvested in the club and we continue to go down the route we have been with minimal spending. Now if that means the likes of Benyu, Bishop, McDonnell, Clarke and others to progress and be given a chance then I'm all for that. That being said the squad is lacking in depth in certain areas particularly midfield and defense. I think 3 signings, including Coke, would be enough but we don't need to go out and spend ridiculous money. Jonny Williams as good as he is, is probably a stretch too far and his fitness is a worry for me despite his undoubted talent. Wilkinson from Stoke could be an option at full back, I'd look at bringing Anderson back if he would agree to cover at full back.

What happened to our once infamous scouting netowk? We were the kings at bringing in gems for next to nothing, where's the next tarrico, reuser, hreidarsson, gaardsoe??? the club has definitely gone backwards compared to those days
