Hyam's Rotherham Loan Switch Confirmed
Thursday, 26th Nov 2015 11:41

Midfielder Luke Hyam’s loan move to Rotherham United, which was first revealed by TWTD yesterday morning, has been confirmed. The 24-year-old will be with the Millers until January 23rd.

“I spoke to my agent and the Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy and they told me that Rotherham were interested in taking me on loan,” Hyam told the official Millers website.

“They asked me what I thought and I was keen to come straight away. I always look forward to a challenge. I’ve never moved previously. I’ve always played at Ipswich all my career but I just need to play some games now so this is a great opportunity.”

Hyam, who is contracted to the Blues until next summer with that dal understood to include an option for a further year, is on the way back from a knee problem which he first suffered in January and which required surgery in the summer.

The Blues academy product is very much in McCarthy’s long-term plans but is currently unlikely to play first-team games at Portman Road as he continues his recovery with the Town manager having plenty of other central midfield options available to him.

“If he comes back having had all the time out and gets fit and then he doesn’t play and he travels with us and he doesn’t play, travels with us and doesn’t play again, he loses all the benefit of all his rehab,” McCarthy said last Friday.

“If we can put him out for a month, which I think we probably can, and he’s happy to do it, then that’s what will happen.”

The former Northgate High School pupil, who made his return for Town’s U21s at QPR last week, says he’s looking forward to getting back into senior action.

“It has been a while since I have had the opportunity to play first-team football, so this is a great opportunity for me to get some games and try to impress and help get some points for Rotherham,” he added.

“I am a hard working player and I like to get stuck in. I know the club is close to the bottom but I like to roll my sleeves up and get stuck into the challenge. I like to get up and down the pitch and hopefully I can do that here and do a good job for the team.

“I played with Frazer Richardson, Paul Green and Danny Collins whilst I was at Ipswich. They are all top guys and from what the manager said it is a really good group of lads here so I am looking forward to meeting them all and training with them today.”

Hyam, who subsequently trained with his new team-mates this morning, can be recalled by Town at 24 hours’ notice after the first 28 days of the loan.

Football League clubs have until 5pm today to sign players via the emergency loan facility.

Speaking on Friday of last week, McCarthy had no plans to add to his squad before the deadline, while he was also open to the likes of Josh Emmanuel and Myles Kenlock going out on loan to gain experience.

Yesterday, 21-year-old striker James Alabi joined Grimsby Town on loan.

Great deal for Rotherham. Give him a couple of games and he will be flying in to tackles. Hopefully this works out and he'll come back and force his way back in to our 1st team.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder, wasn't at his best before the injury so I hope he comes back to fulfill the promise he showed before. Would love to see him and Bishop establish a partnership for the near future.

still see hyam as a ball winner! loves putting a put in and genuinely think that is where you'll get the best out of him in a defensive midfield position alongside a skuse type! good player in my opinion and loan will only benfit him! good luck lad!

Can't see him in a town shirt again. If I was him I would see it as knuckling down and playing for a contract at Rotherham. For some reason his face just doesn't seem to fit with Mick.

Always liked Luke and think we've missed him. Was just starting to mature and getting into more forward positions. Hopefully we see more of him after Xmas.

NSL,that's a daft comment. Mick loves a grafter and Hyam is the biggest grafter we have when he's fit. Good luck Luke.

So we loan out more players but bring in none !!!!

Our back 5 is bang average !! Actually no it's not, it's massively below average. Gerk the Berk with glue on his backside so he can't come off his line would not get in a league 1 team. Chambers is the worst full back in the division. Smith costs us so many goals, panicks every time the ball is on his right foot but mr stubborn keeps picking him at RCB, Berra has to cover everyone else and Knudsen is terrible, even his secret weapon long throw is rubbish.

Rather than concerning ourselves with squad/back up players we should be worried about our atrocious back 5 that let us down game after game but MM pucks regardless. They are out of form out of position and out of ability and yet he says no loans in because there is nothing better out there than we have. You must be delusional Mick. Wake up and sort the real issue which is you and your refusal to drop the dross in our defence !!!

prebbs007 - what the hell has that rant got to do with Hyam going out on loan..?!

Just came on here to say how weird it is to see Luke holding another shirt. Can't get used to it...

Slambo, it's to do with loans full stop. Mick says there is nothing better out there than what we have !!! We have one of the worst defence in the league and all he does is stick with the same individuals. It's not a rant it's facts and facts Mick likes to dismiss. While we send players out on loan he refuses to see the real issue and address it by bringing in any quality at the back. Sorry if you feel I'm ranting but it's annoying when we play well but can't stop simple goals down to schoolboy defending. I wish Hyam all the best but his chances are limited with us right now so hopefully he gets done game time.

We have loaned out 4 players in 2 days and brought none in so that should indicate how well we are doing ??? We are 10th in the league. That good enough then is it ?? Really Mick is our squad good enough ?? 10th. Clearly not !!!

Only a loan? I was hoping it would be permanent. Rotherham is just about his level, I class him as one of the players (along with Boring Billy) who have put us in the position we are in now. Average mid table championship
