Town in Contract Talks With Hyam
Tuesday, 2nd Feb 2016 12:29

Town have begun talks with midfielder Luke Hyam regarding a new contract, TWTD understands.

The 24-year-old’s current deal is set to end in the summer, although the club has an option for a further season.

Hyam has recently returned to action after almost 11 months out with a knee injury and manager Mick McCarthy, a big fan of the former Northgate High School pupil, is keen to extend his stay at the club he supported as a boy.

We understand a contract - probably along the lines of the two-year deals with options for third seasons recently handed to other senior players - isn’t too far from being agreed.

Over the weekend, Hyam was linked with Sheffield Wednesday, Cardiff City and Bristol City, while a number of other clubs are also keen on the academy product, who spent time on loan at Rotherham before Christmas.

Hyam is expected to return to the Town starting line-up for this evening’s home game against Reading in place of the suspended Jonathan Douglas.

If he does play alongside Skuse tonight it would be interesting to see how often each of them shows for the ball off the back 5? If Skuse is the genius MM and lots of posters suggest, it should be him. But bet it isn't which actually speaks volumes.

Good to see, hugely underrated and I'd wager not very good on FIFA.

I have always been impressed by Hyam, his work ethic and passion shine through, please give me some good news and sign him to a long term contract.

Poor old Hyam and Skuse play in possibly the most unglamorous position on the park. Both are competent with Skuse perhaps the better passers and Hyam having more of a physical presence. To some degree they have faced criticism as a pair because our formation is too defensive and too direct but they don't pick the team or decide what formation we are going to play. If Hyam was signed on a free Mick and a good few supporters would be crowing about it but sometimes we take our existing squad for granted and don't realise what good sense it makes to retain players like Hyam.

Luke Hyam is a vastly underrated player. He is in the mould of Nicky Butt who was also the underrated player in the Man Utd team of Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, etc. He isn't a flair player or the one who visibly stands out in the team but he holds the team together when he is played in the defensive midfield role. He is easily good enough for the Premiership and will be a target for Premiership club if he gets a run in the team injury free.

Sign him up quickly. A solid Championship midfielder who supports the club. Much rather have him in the squad than Coke. Was so hoping Norwich would put a cheeky 500K bid for Coke just before the transfer deadline.
