Pitman Could Join Town's International Contingent
Friday, 12th Feb 2016 06:00

Brett Pitman could join Town’s international contingent if his native Jersey succeed with their bid to join UEFA.

But nine-goal top scorer Pitman is realistic enough to admit it might never happen, although the Channel Island with a population of around 100,000 wants to follow Gibraltar’s lead and take part in the European Championship qualifiers.

Jersey needs to be accepted as a full member of UEFA if that is going to happen and they can join other minnows like San Marino, Andorra and the Faroe Islands to compete against some of the giants of the world, never mind European, game.

Pitman smiled: “If Jersey did have a side I’d be disappointed if I wasn’t in it. The only other player born in Jersey and playing in The Football League is a lad at Rochdale, Peter Vincenti.

“This has been spoken about before but I think there are a lot of obstacles to be overcome before it happens. I’m not sure of all the ins and outs but I know there are many hurdles to overcome.

“I’m not even sure if I am in favour of the idea. You have to look and ask if there is any point in Germany going to San Marino and winning 15-0. Is that not just a waste of everyone’s time?

“It’s not really for me to answer but that’s how I would see it. There’s also the risk of big players getting injured and where’s the reward when you basically know what the result is going to be beforehand?

“But if it happens and they want me to play I won’t turn them down. That’s where I was born and it’s something I would enjoy doing, but whether you can really class yourself as an international footballer playing for Jersey I’m not so sure.”

Can't he play for any of the home nations seeing as he was born in the channel islands?

Matt le Tissier and Graham le Saux were both Channel Islanders.
