Town Confirm Hyam Signs New Deal
Wednesday, 11th May 2016 13:07

Town have confirmed that midfielder Luke Hyam has signed a new two-year deal through to the summer of 2018 with an option for a further season, as revealed by TWTD yesterday.

As previously reported, the club and Hyam initially failed to agree new terms but the player accepted a revised offer towards the end of last month, the Blues having already activated an option for another season in his previous contract.

Hyam came through Town academy and having made his debut at Middlesbrough on the opening day of the 2010/11 campaign has now made 114 starts and 17 sub appearances, scoring three goals.

The former Northgate High School pupil missed the early part of 2014/15 having undergone knee surgery but, having spent a month on loan at Rotherham, returned to the side just after Christmas and went on to make 11 starts and six sub appearances.

Phil - typo, should say missed the early part of *2015/16*

Congratulations though Luke, great to see one of our own stay with us - even if he's nothing more than a squad player would rather have him than another journeyman.

Smith, Kenlock, Emmanuel, Bishop, Hyam, Dozzell, McDonnell - great to have so many of the Academy in the first team squad! Hopefully Clarke and a few others will break through next season too.

ipswich_crazy2011 luke hyam is not the sort of player who will win us any games either by making a goal saving tackle or putting in a through ball or day i say score a goal we would be better of letting him go and playing bishop or dozzel. I will be at every home game again next season and i will never boo or discourage my team. Would be nice to have a player in midfield who could actually have an impact on the game, and getting sent off is not the sort of impact we need.

I personally don't think Luke's good enough to be a top half Championship player but I guess he gives us options if we have injuries and cup games. I don't think he's been singled out for stick like Douglas purely because he's an Ipswich lad. Hope he prooves me wrong though. Good luck Luke!

Didn't sign first contract as he was offered a part in Peaky Blinders.

Waste of time and moneyHasn't improved in the last three years. If more money was offered after he turned down the first offer then shame on board saying there is not much money for. New players.

Good lad. Hope he stays injury free and kicks on. Just hope someone realises he is a defensive player not attacking!

He is one of our own and good luck to him !
However We need to be stepping away from the football fair play charade and signing players with a bit more quality !
And clear the decks

I think he is a lucky lad after turning down original offer.
Bang ordinary player, who has been with Town for several years and shown little improvement.
He is lucky because in Mick McCarthy, running around like a headless chicken to little effect,is seen as a positive attribute;whereas other Managers would like to see a bit more positivity and end product.

Only back up material

Decent squad player (along with Skuse)...still think our priorities this Summer should be a midfield "general" (who can create/pass the ball forwards) and a right-back.

Phil - do you mean 'he missed the early part of the 2015/16 season having undergone knee surgery', and not 2014/15? I'm pretty sure the original injury was at the beginning of 2015 in the Southampton game (Wanyama), and he briefly came back in pre-season last summer before injuring himself again and requiring a second go on the operating table.

A lot of negativity surrounding Hyam at the moment. Lets not forget he was out for the best part of this season, and as a result we have not seen the best of him.

With a full pre season i have no doubts that we will see an improved Luke Hyam next season. Fair enough he may not be of international quality, but he is an honest and reliable performer, who will never let the side down in terms of effort and commitment.

Should be a back up to Skuse and no more. They should NEVER play in the same team together. Simple as

Bemused by some of the comments above...

Luke is better than the majority of midfield we've had play this season.
Hard working - gets stuck in - makes tackles --> Everything you want from a cdm.

And those that say he can't play a through ball - obviously forgotten the cracking ball he put down the line for someone to cross for Pitman to score in the last minute for a win!

Oh how short the memories are - we cry when our academy players don't get played and then want to shift them off when we do - then when we shift them off we cry....

Make your minds up!
