Town Chiefs Decide Summer Plans
Wednesday, 18th May 2016 20:11

Town boss Mick McCarthy says he’s talked to Blues owner Marcus Evans and they know the areas of the squad they will be looking to strengthen and have identified targets they want to recruit during the summer.

McCarthy has previously stated that wide players will again be high on his list, while Evans has said he will be willing to pay fees if required.

“I have spoken to Marcus. We have sat down and had a conversation,” McCarthy told the club site.

“We know the areas that we need to strengthen. It just depends on whether we can get the players we want into the club.”

The Town boss says he'd like his team to play more attractive football but says results are more important than style: “We’d all like to play better, free-flowing football.

“We did try and be more considered with the ball but there were times last season when we made 400 passes and lost and times when we made 180 and won.

“Leicester had fewer passes, less possession, made more tackles and had the best defenders and they are champions of England. No one is moaning there.

“It’s about what you do with the ball that counts. What we did with it last year was stick it in the net with a 27-goal striker [Daryl Murphy]. This year we didn’t do that.

“There was a lot of talk about style of football and changing it but no one said that last year when he reached the play-offs and were successful.

“Yes, we could have done better this season and there is no doubt that we missed our more creative players.

“That definitely had an impact but Marcus said to me the other day, don’t change what you are doing because it’s got us competing at the right end of the table for the last two or three years.”

Sure you need players to compete in this league, but if you want to get out of it you also need players with a bit more about their game, offer pace and the ability to do the unexpected. If you watch our build up it's laboured and Teams are able to defend more easily.
It's about getting the balance right something McCarthy is paid alot of money to achieve but has failed to do so in his time here. OK some will say we've finished 6th and 7th in the last two seasons but can you honestly say you've enjoyed the football. As I see it McCarthy has reached the crossroads so his decisions over the summer are critical.

The usual badly thought out drivel from a very boring man.

The loss of some of our creative players did cost us but so did negative tactics, square pegs in round holes, inexplicable goalkeeping decisions and a very average back 6 (I include both defensive midfielders in this whoever they are). Been said a million times - with Mick you get what you see and unlike supposed long ball colleagues like Pardew, Pulis and Allardyce he has not evolved and developed. Everything that is bad about British coaching and management. All managers in football and outside, have a shelf life and new hungry adaptable people need to be given the chance to take their place. There is risk attached but as an entertainment business you need to take risks - crowds dwindling, long term support reducing and reputation in tatters. If I were the owner I'd be seriously worried but I think he's lost interest and wants to sell so having us in the top 10 on a shoestring suits him down to the ground. I really hate the idea of a sugar daddy coming in and buying the club but if fronted by some Ipswich people with a desire to do things our way then maybe that is the price we have to pay....

Ah well that's confirmed it to me. Same approach again next season towards game plan and tactics and not a lot of, or any money will be spent on transfers, reading between the lines.

Micks comments bit ambiguous;but perhaps they were meant to be.
On the one hand he dangles the carrot of playing more attractive football;but then shoots it down by saying about playing 400 passes and losing ,and winning with 180 odd.

Tip tapping it around in front of the opposing team I agree is not effective, nor is the hoof ball to no one in particular, which is promptly either headed back by a defender or trapped to set up opposition attack, which we often do.

I agree to a point about Leicester;but there are considerable differences.

1.Their balls over the top or into channels are invariably seized upon by Vardy etc;whereas ours are not,as our players don't appear to have the positivity.
2.Our players are not quick/sharp enough to get possession;resulting in a lot of chasing, hence the burn out later in season.
3. Mick seems to set up to negate the opposition in home matches, same as away.Attitude should be different ie more positive to put more pressure on the visitors to Portman Rd.
4.Lack of spending means we generally get other clubs cast offs, who are obviously not as good as a lot of other clubs players.

However despite the above MM has done well to finish where he has I feel;so he isn't that bad a manager;but his rather belligerent attitude if somebody asks him a difficult question, either press or public;allied to his apparent dislike of change to players or formations(Says he is still prefers 4-4-2)does not go down well with a lot of fans.Factor in the entertainment value, which again he doesn't seem to bother about,or cup games; and you have the reason why many are not renewing.Enough to make the club extend the early bird sale to the middle of July and write to the former season ticket holders.Unheard of by me in over 50years supporting Town.
Finally somebody on here questioned whether I had met Mr McCarthy,as they had, saying that he created a good impression on them;but was a typical Yorkshireman.

Well I have met him and stand by the above.

Bleu - Sounds about right.

Proves my theory that Evans has our Club, well and truly stitched up.
Like it, or not - it's true.
