McCarthy: Fees a "Possibility"
Friday, 29th Jul 2016 06:00

Boss Mick McCarthy says Town paying fees is a “possibility” as he looks to add to his squad ahead of the start of the season.

The Blues’ only additions so far this summer are central defender Adam Webster, who joined from Portsmouth for £700,000 plus Matt Clarke, and fellow centre-half Paul Digby, who signed on a permanent basis from Town’s opening day opponents Barnsley following his loan at the end of 2015/16.

“We’re still trying, hopefully I’m going to get them in before the season starts,” McCarthy said.

Asked whether there is money available for fees or if all deals will be free transfers or loans, he added: “That’s another possibility, if it’s the right players, the right deal.”

Looking back at the weeks since the players returned from their summer break at the end of June, McCarthy says he’s pleased to have virtually a fully fit squad, a couple of minor niggles aside.

“I tell you every pre-season, it’s about getting everybody through and fit, and we’ve just about done that,” he said.

“We’ve got Pits that’s got a sore toe, Luke Hyam’s got a sore knee, other than that we’re all right.

“Bish has got through it and Murph and Didz, so we’re getting to August 6th, hopefully, with a fully fit squad.

“I think our games have been decent. I watched Wimbledon against Palace last night and I thought that had a really slow tempo to it.

“And I think we’ve played some decent stuff. I thought against Charlton the other night we played well but we just couldn’t score. Brett hit the cross-bar twice, Chambo had two chances so we’ve changed his contact lenses since then.

“I thought we played well, I was pleased with that performance and Bart never really had anything to do.”

He says Town didn’t create as many opportunities in all their friendlies: “We haven’t created that many chances, although I thought we did against Charlton.

“It’s up to us to create them, perhaps we didn’t have Murph in the team a couple of times or we didn’t put enough crosses in.

“At Barnet we lost to a penalty and that was a bit of a nothing game. We were just getting there.

“Cambridge, I thought we had enough chances to win that and gave away a really bad goal at the end, which infuriated me as anybody who saw me afterwards would have known.

“And I thought at Charlton we played well and created chances, we just didn’t score them.”

Man U are apparently set to let a lot of players go and there's a lot of promising youngsters there we could pick up for cheap!

With the current squad however I am confident we can have a productive season and mick seems confident, and with players back from injury Im optimistic about the season ahead!

Man Utd nearly rans? Lee Martin was one of them. Not impressed

Man U let us have that talented winger Martin , also produced Stewart , Henshall and others so would be very hesitant going there again . Perhaps a lot of signings by other teams are for players who do not fit the bill , in attitude or personality , for us . Also could be panic signings to try and maintain a position .

Last time Mick said this we signed Malarcyk. Not against the signing but just saying fee could be nominal.

We have no chance of signing McCormack. Truly great player but won't come to us.

Would be extremely surprised and dumbfounded if we beat Norwich to the signing of Ross McCormack

Just seen Stearman is available potentially from Fulham.
But can we compete with Wolves and Derby?!
We should be able to, but feels depressingly like we won't be.

I kept reading on here how MM was renowned for getting his signings done early etc. I did point out that to be a load of rubbish.

Don't think we need any more new signings and should stick with what we have. We have enough class already to avoid relegation by a large margin and should use this season to give the 7 or 8 youngsters we have a good run in the first team. We should look forward to the season after this season, as I seriously feel we could push once again for a top 6 spot.

There are too many good teams in the Championship this season and I don't feel we can compete against most of them. 2017-18 could be our year though. Let's give the youngsters a good run and improve them.

Will Keane from Utd been released ?

BrettenhamBlue added 13:36 - Jul 29
Keane and Wilson both released. This really is MM's chance. If he wants fans to be ecstatic and to look forward to this season (rather than feel justified dread) he should sign 2 or 3 of these released players asap. What a turn around that would be for this club! We can actually offer them first team football, unlike any club in the top 2 tiers other than Hull.

Good gracious,Mick saying we could spend a bit more money, lets hope it is true. Will leave the Manager to sort out where he wants to strengthen;but have my own ideas like a lot on here. I said recently,1 player on loan, one free, and another for a fee should strengthen us enough to challenge once again.Well looks like we may have found the free one in Lamah;so that would leave just two.

Ferguson,agree with everything you say.

The Ipswichman, you mention lack of wingers;but Stewart has played well in pre -season,when given the opportunity.

how can anyone find anything positive to say about the forthcoming season? we just keep hearing the same old guff over and over again. I love the club dearly but we cannot hope to compete without new faces, ok our first 11 is probably good enough but if we get 3/4 injuries we are screwed. We have some promising youngsters but Mick has not got the balls to put his faith in them, opting to play Chambers at RB. If you think we are gonna get premiership youngsters in dream on, a question of wages also comes into the equation. a little light at the end of the Tunnel is all that we ask!!

& this is what we have come to ....... I too laughed when I heard that our neighbours had offered £10m for McCormack & their "East Anglian rivals Ipswich are also in the race for him" ........ then realised how sad that was ...... that we are nowhere near other clubs in their ability to strengthen with such quality (either through choice or financial ability ...... whatever your take on that argument is) ....... depressing ......

Manchester United have made the Belgium winger Adnam Januzaj available. He'd probably be too expensive for us, but it's nice to dream ...

Much as I think Will Keane and James Wilson (Paddy McNair, and Tayler Blackett for that matter) I would be amazed if any of then drop down. If i were any of the 3 promoted teams I'd snap them up, especially Hull who are desperate for players.

The released lists have been quite late this year partly due to lots of managerial changes.

I don't think Micks been sat on his arse all summer. I wonder if he has (a little bit) more money to spend and we're just not seeing the bids accepted

The following would be a good start:
McCarthy try utilising the talent WE DO HAVE! Play your 'footballers'.....Bishop, Sears, McGoldrick, Bru and even Dozzell!
Stop worrying about the opposition, and give it a go!
LISTEN, I'm not saying we will win the bloody league, but at least our team may produce some entertainment and good moments this season!
AT THIS PARTICULAR TIME BEING A TOWN I DONT THINK WE CAN GET OR ASK FOR MUCH MORE!!!!

GFH added 20:11 - Jul 29
Well its a result business and we've had to wait too long for some success, so sort it out or get out.

It's good play that gets the crowds buzzing, if you want a twelth man MM do something about it, PR was like a library last season. If you want Zombies you'll get them by playing that way, at times it just felt like going through the motions.
Yes, sometimes the long ball works, but lets at lets least try and keep the opposition guessing.
Opposing managers can set theire sides up blindfold to counter the hoofball we played last season, I for one don't want to watch another one like it.
Oh no, I'm getting that urge for human flesh, must be a derby coming up.
COYB's.

....... a week to go - and the team is looking somewhat punchless. with yet again, the prospect of playing square pegs in round holes / players out of position. Due to shortfall of crucial signings.

Haven't we been here here before ....... ?? - I seem to remember we have ...... !!
