Newcastle Eyeing McGoldrick
Friday, 5th Aug 2016 06:00

TWTD understands that Newcastle United are among the clubs keen on Blues striker David McGoldrick. As previously reported, Sheffield Wednesday are also one of a number of Championship sides keeping tabs on the 28-year-old, who is also interesting clubs abroad including FC Twente.

Like the Owls, the Magpies are set to monitor the Republic of Ireland international’s progress in the opening weeks of the season ahead of the transfer window’s closure at the end of the month.

Town are keen to keep hold of McGoldrick and are unlikely to be tempted by anything other than a very significant sum for the ex-Nottingham Forest man, having turned down a £7 million offer from Leicester in the summer of 2014.

Given McGoldrick’s fitness problems in the seasons since the Foxes’ bid, it’s understood that some interested clubs, including Newcastle, would prefer to pay a smaller initial loan fee - probably around the £1 million mark - with a view to handing over a larger figure if the move is a success and turned into a permanent switch.

Speaking last week, manager Mick McCarthy said that although he wasn’t aware of any specific interested parties, it would be no surprise to him if clubs were targeting McGoldrick, who is contracted to Town until the summer of 2018.

“Probably, I haven’t heard anything. If there isn’t any interest I’d be surprised, he’s a good player,” he said.

“To be fair to us, we’ve not seen the best of him over the last couple of seasons because of injury. So I’d like to see that this year with us. I don’t want to see him going anywhere else.

“But I’m damned sure there’s somebody interested in him, I don’t know who they are if that’s the case.”

At yesterday’s press conference, McCarthy said McGoldrick has been doing everything he can to catch his eye.

“If you’d have seen him training yesterday, I think he was trying to tell me something,” he said.

Having missed out on a place in the Irish Euro 2016 squad at the last, the chance to be involved in World Cup qualifiers and then perhaps the finals in two years’ time is a further incentive for McGoldrick during the new season.

“For sure," McCarthy continued. "Has Robbie Keane announced his retirement? I don’t know if he has! If he has, he’s been brilliant, if he hasn’t I’m sure he will at some stage.

“Didzy was close to going [to the Euros] anyway and there are going to be positions. We all know the squad will change. Somebody will get injured, Ireland will have different players because of circumstances, it’ll happen.

“So he wants to get in the team. He was desperate to go to the European Championships and if he can think he can get to the World Cup, that would be great for him.”

IF he managed to stay match fit for 46 games, then YES we must keep him,but I just don't think he will. So,if we had a very good offer then I think it best in the interest of the club to sell as I assume from other posts that he is a very high earner. But having said that I would be sorry to see him go because I don't think we as a club have seen the very best from him,Yet.

£1M, try before you buy?? Are they taking the P? We would all like that deal, then a player gets injured & the deal goes down the pan & we lose out.

KEEP HIM, WE WONT SPEND TO GET A REPLACEMENT. IT NEWCASTLE WANT HIM THEM IT OBVIOUS THERE ARENT MANY IF HIS CLASS AROUND.

I'm 50/50 on this one.If right offer come in£5 million then if that money is reinvested straight away in another striker then yes .So scouts need to be looking now ! Not after sale gone through

A fit McGoldrick is the difference between a top 6 finish and a 7th place finish in my opinion, personally 5mil isn't worth it, as we all know in the back of our head it won't be invested into the playing squad

A fully fit McG in today's market probably worth at least the £7m that Leicester bid 2 years ago and if we could guarantee he'd be fully fit for most of the season No way would you want to sell and even if we did there would be no guarantees the money would be as some have suggested be reinvested ! But certainly the evidence of the last 2 seasons would suggest he will struggle (through no fault of his own) to say fit. We missed his creativity badly last season and I don't think we have anybody right now that could fully fill that role and if anybody thinks you'll find someone for £1-2m in the transfer market your dreaming!

If we sell him, the we would have to spend a significant amount to bring in a top quality replacement. £1M loan fee just isn't enough.

74 goals in 286 league appearances (or so says Wikipedia) - and all of those outside of the top flight (my point being that 'top' strikers tend to have a much better strike rate than 1 in 4 in the Champ/Div 1).

Never seen the fuss myself; would we be ecstatic/excited if we were on the point of buying a 1 in 4 striker aged 28 who is always injured?? Me thinks not. We're dreaming if we think someone is going to stump up 7m for him - didn't we worry last year that Murphy was going to Boro for 4 or 5m?? And by the way when are his 28 goals a season coming back!?!

Oh dear.....
