McGoldrick Facing Another Spell on the Sidelines
Friday, 12th Aug 2016 12:19

Town striker David McGoldrick is set for another spell on the sidelines after picking up an ankle injury in Tuesday’s EFL Cup defeat to Stevenage.

We understand the striker suffered an ankle ligament injury shortly after coming on as a half-time sub against Boro and is thought likely to be out for at least six weeks.

[Edit] However, surgery and a longer absence has not yet been ruled out. The former Nottingham Forest and Southampton man is set to see a specialist on Monday.[/Edit]

The latest injury is a big blow for the 28-year-old, who has picked up a succession of injuries in the last few seasons, largely unrelated to one another.

Town boss Mick McCarthy acted quickly to add to his squad, re-signing Luke Varney on a short-term contract.

Even when he was fully fit (I think about a season or so ago, can't remember when it was so long ago) he wasn't the player he was, holds the ball up well and always looks to create on the deck but he's never been fully fit for so long now it does make you wonder if we should look to sell.

Injuries unrelated to one another it says elsewhere.Does he overcompensate for weakness ? Does he report fit when he isn't ? Has his training regime changed ?

I ask myself who has managed his recovery form injuries in the past, and how closely they do so. Hope it's just that he's not strong enough in general to recover from minor knocks or to keep up with the fitness regime at the club.

Sadly, nothing lasts for ever.

Time for Sears to play up top in his proper position alongside Murphy (or Pitman when fit) maybe he will regain the confidence that has been drained out of him by being played out of position, I won't hold my breath!

And that's why we should put out a second string in the league cup

Really bad news : by that I mean re-signing dead-leg Varney. As for McGoldrick, players who go through their careers with a succession of injuries are not just unlucky, they have basic fitness issues that mean they are always prone to these things. That must leave us with a squad of fewer than 40 players now, so time to persuade a few more retired OAPs to come back into the game like Varney. Strewth.

He's not an athlete and always going to pick up injuries. Big blow.

oh for christ sake, it's a joke, he is unable to stay fit to warrant getting a wage at this top level, what is the point in using up a squad place.

To think I've got to come on here and see article after article in the coming weeks about how he is "closing in on a return", for it to then be March and we'l all still be waiting. Please spare us TWTD. Is anyone even surprised anymore, you may as well just copy and paste from the previous 400 injuries.

And as for getting Luke Varney in as "cover"...

He seems to be made of glass. Good player, but the return we have had out of him for the last 2 years you have to question. Some others have questioned his attitude in the past could he be our daniel sturridge??

I thought it was curious that MM signed Reg in a panic! It's nothing to do with cover for Murphy it was clearly because MM knew McG wasn't fit. This is desperate by MM and shouldn't cut with anyone.
It's sad to say that McG has no future at Town, even when he plays he doesn't look fully committed. MM must get loanee striker before window closes

Get him gone ..... But of course the injury spans the transfer window so even if anyone wanted him no way are they doing that now.

Let him go pay his contract up and stop the deluded believing we have a superstar. After all these injuries he is less a player due to time spent sitting on his a@@e rather than playing

His injury record is abismal & worst for us missing for the Norwich game!

The only silver lining, is the fact that he is unlikely to be sold & the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

Signing Varney proves Mick has no plans to bring in a new striker this season.

The best player at the club for the past 3 seasons despite barely playing 90 mins. Says it all doesn't it.

Sick note we should just take any money for this sick note and move on
sitting in the treatment room is of no use to us at all

Like many have suggested, mick needs to bring in a replacement asap. I hope jonny Williams pops up again as he's more than capable of filling in that hole behind the striker we all want didz to be in. A team of jonny, bishop and didz(once back) is very attractive

Called this last Saturday! Love didzy and want him to get back the form of his first season with us. However, if we r honest he's not been the same player since and isn't fit and hasn't been for three years. He will never play to that level again which is a shame. That 7 million seems an age ago

I'm going to get shot down for this, but I'm absolutely sick to death of reading this same story every season. He's just stealing a big wage and offering nothing in return year after year! I just hope we never turned any bids down.

Time to just humanely lead him out into a field and, as with a lame horse, shoot him to put him out of his misery.

But hang on everyone! We've signed Luke Varney again!!! Phew. For a minute there I was worried we'd signed a striker who would just huff and puff, run around a lot with no real end product, and certainly wouldn't score much, if any, in the way of goals.

Ipswich crazy maybe some of your name reflects your personality, idiots a bit harsh, some of your statement is true you have to play to make something happen, 1 in every 4 appearances is hardly worth his wages as i said previously,

He can't help getting injured. He's obviously a bit injury prone and that's not his fault.

happybeingblue added 14:26 - Aug 12
Thought it was too good to be true, some players are injury prone and dids is one of those similar to likes of Wilshire kieron dyer etc ...basically they are unreliable as good as they can be on their day which is few and far between ...time to get a new sigming in ASAP
