McCarthy: Varney Not the Last Signing
Friday, 12th Aug 2016 16:05

Town boss Mick McCarthy is confident of adding further to his squad before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, having re-signed Luke Varney on a short-term deal until January earlier today.

“It’s great to have Reg back,” McCarthy told the club site regarding Varney, who is back at Portman Road for a third spell having been on a short-term deal last season after a spell on loan from Blackburn during the previous campaign.

“He was a free agent at the end of last season so he could do what he wanted but I had reservations about not sorting something out then.

“He’s a good player and has been a good servant to us. He’s a great personality. We all love him, the staff, the players.

“With Didz injured, we had to try and get someone in before the weekend. That was never going to be easy but I knew Reg would be fit and could do a job for us.

“There were clubs interested in him but I rang him yesterday and it was all sorted in no time.”

McCarthy says he has continued to speak to Premier League clubs about more signings, presumably loans, although at yesterday’s press conference he wasn’t ruling out further permanent additions.

“We are still looking to add to the squad further before the window closes. I’ve had discussions with some Premier League clubs and they are saying ‘We are trying to get someone in. This might happen, that might happen - if it does, we might be able to do something’.

“So it’s a case of being patient at the moment but I’m confident that we will add to the squad before the end of August.”

Stephen Hunt is possible as my mate got his autograph yesterday in Ipswich, most likely just visiting old friends but not impossible. Noel is now at Portsmouth.

Nikola Zigic is still in the uk and available on a free. We might get a season out of him if we are lucky and he certainly matches our ethos and playing style (hoofball). Hogan Ephraim also available and matches our need of a winger/striker. Another obvious match is Larsen Toure, who given our depleted squad is worth a look at again. He certainly had something to offer and knew how to run, quite often miscontrolled the ball when he did unfortunately. Cherno Samba has decided to restart his career also so he could be worth a look. Though he's ex-Norwich Lafferty would do right now and think he would get 10 goals for us this season.

I am just hoping we might get 3 premier league players in on-loan.

Those that are calling for youngsters, many of them nowhere near ready. Watched a lot of u21 and u18 last season and apart from Dozzell, Sam Ford and Charlie Brown often not good viewing.

Well Sam Ford and Charlie Brown are gone now - both picked up by Premiership clubs!

I like Varneys attitude and effort but this is just a panic signing. If he wasn't good enough in May he isn't good enough in August.

What next...we made a mistake with Frank Nouble and he's coming back on £20k a week !? (head in hands)

DESPERATION, I kept saying that McGoldrick didn't look right on Tuesday, has he been nursing this injury. This once again exposers how weak a squad we have.
Another humiliation is looming Saturday week.
I hope I'm wrong.

Not being funny but when you have to resort to signing players you've already told you don't want..well you have to wonder what the hell's going on don't you?

How long before Tabby's back?!

Is this a surprise? No. Unlike many I've never been a huge fan of McGoldrick because he's always looked lazy to me but I have been able to see past that because he clearly is one of our better technical players however his injury record stinks and you can't have a player in the squad who you know won't see out half a season.
My only hope now is the Freddie Sears gets to play up front where he belongs and the midfield are encouraged to play through balls for him to exploit opposition defenders. Thats what he's best at Not stuck out on the wing. We have others to do that job.
As far as another striker is concerned we can but hope.
