Newcastle Targeting Town Striker Murphy
Friday, 26th Aug 2016 17:16

Newcastle United are keen to sign Town striker Daryl Murphy before the transfer window closes on Wednesday, TWTD understands.

Murphy, 33, was first linked with the Magpies in July, reports the Irish international subsequently dismissed as speculation.

However, we understand that the North-East club are now showing strong interest in the Waterford-born frontman, who signed a two-year contract with an option for a further season with the Blues last summer.

Town would be looking for a significant fee for one of their key players, despite Murphy’s age, and would want to add a direct replacement for their number nine before Wednesday’s deadline with Championship clubs now no longer able to sign players on emergency loans.

We understand that the Blues have shown interest in taking 19-year-old Newcastle youngster Adam Armstrong on loan, however, the 5ft 8in tall striker, who scored 20 goals in 38 starts and two sub appearances while on loan in League One with Coventry last season, is not a similar player to Murphy and has played only a few minutes of football at Championship level.

Speaking yesterday Town boss Mick McCarthy said he was looking to add players with Championship experience as he feels his squad already includes a number of more youthful players.

Murphy, whose first English club was Newcastle's great rivals Sunderland, initially joined the Blues for the first of three loan spells under Roy Keane's management in 2010 before signing permanently from Celtic in the summer of 2013.

In the 2014/15 campaign he topped the Championship scoring charts with 27 goals as the Blues reached the play-offs.

Last season the 23-times-capped Republic of Ireland striker netted a more modest 10 in an injury-affected campaign and he is yet to get off the mark this season, having had what looked to be a perfectly good goal ruled out at Wolves.

In total, Murphy has scored 67 goals in 207 starts and 18 substitute appearances for Town.

As things stand at present, we understand that Murphy is in the Town squad for Saturday’s home game against Preston.

If the price is decent , we should sell . He's been a good servant but this is his chance of a last decent deal , which must be attractive to him .

We were going to have to replace him soon anyway , so we should get a decent fee now , rather than losing him for nothing .

As long as we get a decent , younger replacement , not Best and NOT a loan , we can continue to build a good young squad that will get better and better , with the likes of Ward , Webster , Bishop etc .

Armstrong only signed a new contract yesterday so 100% he ain't coming permanently.

Interestingly Murphy's goals per games average since he permanently signed has been 1 in every 2.5 games so if he stayed fit for a full season he'll get about 16-18 goals (during his previous loan spells, where he was often shunted out to the wing by Jewell & Keane it drops to less than 1 in 4).

McGoldrick's goal ratio is 1 in 3.25 games but his injuries mean he's not as reliable as we'd all like.

Sears's goal ratio is 1 in 3 but he has been played wide in a 3 or as a wide midfielder.

Pitman is just over 1 in 3

Leon best has only hit double figures twice in his career and that was in league 1 with Coventry and 10 goals for Newcastle in the Championship.

Cold hard statistics would indicate Murphy is our most effective striker and we should battle to keep him, however, if McCarthy has another hidden gem such as Grant Ward lined up or maybe a season long loan for a premiership player such as Connor Wickham who might be out of the picture at Palace after Benteke's signing it's worth considering the move if the money's right.

Tell Newcastle for £7m they can have Murphy & McGoldrick too.

Bring in Wickham & Rhodes on loan (in my dreams).

One of Rhodes or Wickham could be doable on a season long loan if we get decent money for Murphy. Wickham's all round game would give us a similar like for like replacement for Murphy, Rhodes would bring a shed load of goals.

Sell him on sign Joniesta and play him behind pitman. Haven't seen the best of pits yet but he needs players around him that will supply him like he got at Bournemouth

To be honest, I think we should sell Murph as he is well past his best and any club willing to pay a fee should be taken advantage of.
Yes, he is still good in the air but his effectiveness has really diminished over the years and his lack of pace is really worrying.
I would like to say a big thanks to Murph but would be happy to look ahead and replace him with a younger, more mobile striker.
Jordan Rhodes would do :)

He's our best striker but I doubt we'll get loads of money for him. What's the betting we end up selling him for some really low fee? (Like 1.7 million) and have Best as replacement?

This is a no brainer----if we get offered the right money we must sell (£3m plus) AND reinvest in new young stikers----Will Gregg, Lookman,-they are about.

Smurf has been slow and missed chancrs already and this gives us a great opportunity to freshen up the team with fit young ambitious strikers.

Will watch this one with interest!

Silly as it may sound... there are very few replacements for Murphy for OUR team because of the way we play.

If Newcastle offered us 3 or more million I'd be wanting us to have agreed some one like Rhodes on loan who isn't going to play at Boro this year!

According to Twitter, Murphy is not in the squad for Preston. Deal with Newcastle may already be done. 3.5 million with no mention of Armstrong in the deal plus no promotion clause. It's Twitter as a source so might not be true. Check out discussion in forum. It sounds like we are agreeing terms with Leon Best also. Suspect Varney to replace Murphy against Preston if true. Apparently we will know more at 2pm.

I have no idea if there is any truth in this but......

BBC gossip says a deal is close for £5million. It's source for this is TWTD. Since there is no mention of this value in the article then it should tell you how much notice you should really take of these stories.

PS. If that figure is true then we should definitely take it

Long ball team without a target man , could become very frustrating

Fees ranging from 3M to 6M. Armstrong as part of the deal. Promotion clauses. Fees after 10 appearances. One thing that seems certain now is Murphy is gone. Massive blow to the squad IMO. Varney isn't as good as a target man and if we end up with Best as replacement it's hardly going to improve the squad. This will be extremely demoralising for the team as he is an immense character and popular with the players and fans alike.
