Burnley Duo on McCarthy's Wish List
Sunday, 28th Aug 2016 16:57

Burnley pair Lukas Jutkiewicz and Michael Kightly are on Mick McCarthy’s list of potential signings ahead of the transfer window's closure on Wednesday, TWTD understands.

McCarthy is looking to add a direct replacement for Daryl Murphy, who completed his move to Newcastle earlier today, while the Blues boss is also keen on signing another wideman.

The duo, who each have a year left on their contracts, are currently out of the regular first XI at Turf Moor but their availability will depend on Burnley adding to their squad before the window closes at 11pm on Wednesday.

Kightly, 30, was with Tottenham as a youngster and moved on to hometown club Basildon United and then Southend before making his mark in non-league with Grays Athletic, with whom he won the FA Trophy.

In 2006 Town boss Mick McCarthy took him to Wolves, where he was a key player in their 2008/09 Championship title-winning season.

Kightly

Former England U21 international Kightly moved on to Stoke City in August 2012, then joined Burnley on loan in September 2013 and helped them to second spot in the Championship and into the Premier League.

He made the move permanent the following summer and was a member of the squad which, following their relegation in the previous campaign, topped the Championship last season to return to the top flight.

This season Kightly’s only appearance was in the 1-0 EFL Cup loss to Accrington Stanley last Wednesday.

Southampton-born striker Jutkiewicz, 27, was a youth player with his hometown club before moving on to Swindon where he made his first senior appearances late in the 2005/06 season.

His performances for the Robins caught the eye of Everton, who signed him for £1 million in March 2007.

While at Goodison Park Jutkiewicz made one senior sub appearance and spent time on loan at Plymouth, Huddersfield and Motherwell before joining Coventry City on a permanent basis in July 2010.

After 18 months at the Ricoh Arena - where he scored 18 goals in 61 starts and eight sub appearances - the 6ft 1in tall frontman moved to Middlesbrough, initially on loan before the clubs agreed a £1.3 million fee. During his time on Teesside Jutkiewicz scored 15 goals in 52 starts and 19 sub appearances.

Having spent the end of 2013/14 on loan at Bolton, where he scored seven times in 16 starts and four games from the bench, Jutkiewicz joined Burnley in July 2014 for £1.5 million.

Having failed to find the net during 10 starts and 16 sub appearances in the Clarets’ 2014/15 Premier League season, Jutkiewicz’s 2015/16 was curtailed at the end of August when he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury.

He returned to U21s action at the end of the season and this term has made two brief sub appearances in the Premier League in addition to a start in the EFL Cup game against Accrington.

On the whole I think McCarthy has signed well- we should really be using these message boards to say how bloody good Grant Ward is for 500K - not just moaning on like a bunch of middle aged men in need of a jump.

@ CraigEdwards Do you honestly think the stubborn McCarthy would risk being proved wrong. His ego and arrogance wouldn't allow it.

Has MM personally advised TWTD that this above named duo are on the " potential signings list ?
Or is it the work of a chatty agent" striving to make himself a penny or two?
With three days to go to end of transfer window why would any manager reveal to anyone who the real targets are?
As usual much opinion, mainly in the negative, if they are true.
Not a 100% fan of MM but the better players he has signed have been those we had not heard about until they were signed
So let's hope these " rumours" are just that.

According to the BBC Sport website Hal Robson Kanu has not found a club and is likely to loose his place in the Wales squad unless he gets fixed up with another club. Perhaps a move for him might be worth considering as he is only 27 years old and was released by Reading at the end of last season. Just another name to throw into the mix along with the others suggested and he is an International player who shone up well in the recent Euro 2016 tournament. Wages might be a problem but could be worth a try to bring him to ITFC

I'd like to think we can do better. Hopefully this story is wide of the mark as I'd much rather a Championship striker of much higher calibre and proven prowess such as Nugent or Martin, or anybody for that matter who knows where the back of the net is. 20 goals + a season is the difference between top 2 or 3 finish or scrapping with a number of other teams for 6th place or worse! How badly do we want it? We know the fans want it badly enough, but how badly does ME want it? Well guys and girls, we're about to find out! Fingers crossed, how wisely we spend this money could have a huge impact on our season! Please let's show some reasonable ambition and stop trying to do things on the cheap!

Both just been put up forsale???

Signing Rickie lambert...er no thanks! that's looking to the future with a player of 34 but then again similarities in style to Murphy in a way.

This puts us in an impossible situation. The move for Murphy. How long ago did the club know about it? The transfer window is almost over and £3M is an absolute steal by Newcastle. It is the importance of Murphy to us that can't be overstated. He played the Norwich defence on his own and had them in his pocket the other day. If we'd had the bravery we could have won the derby in the second half. Without Murphy we would have lost that game. Whoever comes in now to replace him I feel sorry for them and Mick McCarthy. He is irreplaceable at this stage of the window the one player we should not have let go. Apart from Bart who may now need to keep us in this division with another player of the seaon string of world class displays. All the best to Mick in trying to find a striker to fill Murphy's boots and keep his patience with press and fans.

Lukas Jutkiewicz? Jesus christ. Why don't we just stick a traffic cone up front?

@Kingfisher49; Why hasn't reading re-signed Robson-Kanu? If another championship club have deemed him not good enough for them why would he be good enough for a promotion push with us? Does he have the 20+ goals in him for the campaign ahead?

Anyways, MM is looking at experience at getting promoted from this level so no surprises about the type of players being banded about. I would favour a move for Kightly but not sure about Jutkiewicz, I mean his goal scoring record is not glamourous is it?

Perhaps ME & MM should.ve cashed in on McGoaldrick? Can anyone tell me how many goals we've had from in since being denied a premier league switch? #injuryprone

If Murph has left for Newcastle he will get them a double-figure tally with that level of support but hes not going to play all 40 games is he, 'he now needs to be managed'. £4mill is decent buisness but I could tell MM was a bit resentful that hes losing a proven goalscorer.

I know I'm looking forward to a busy wednesday night for Town :)
