Town Hopeful on Kightly as Best in Talks
Monday, 29th Aug 2016 19:59

TWTD understands Town are hopeful of completing the signing of Burnley winger Michael Kightly before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Wednesday, while talks are ongoing with trialist striker Leon Best regarding a deal.

The Clarets are unwilling to allow Kightly to move on until they have added to their squad, but are expected to make signings before Wednesday’s deadline.

The 30-year-old, who previously played for boss Mick McCarthy at Wolves, was with Tottenham as a youngster and moved on to hometown club Basildon United and then Southend before making his mark in non-league with Grays Athletic, with whom he won the FA Trophy.

In 2006 Town boss McCarthy took him to Molineux, where he was a key player in their 2008/09 Championship title-winning season.

Kightly, who has a year left on his contract at Turf Moor, moved on to Stoke City in August 2012, then joined Burnley on loan in September 2013 and helped them to second spot in the Championship and into the Premier League.

The former England U21 international made the move permanent the following summer and was a member of the squad which, following their relegation in the previous campaign, topped the Championship last season to return to the top flight.

Kightly’s only appearance so far this season was in the 1-0 EFL Cup loss to Accrington Stanley last Wednesday. He was an unused sub as the Clarets lost 3-0 at Chelsea on Saturday.

As previously reported, TWTD understands that Kightly’s Burnley team-mate Lukas Jutkiewicz - also an unused sub at Stamford Bridge - is on Town’s list of potential replacements for striker Daryl Murphy, who joined Newcastle United at the weekend.

Meanwhile, we understand the Blues are in talks with trialist Best regarding a contract, probably to the end of the season, the 29-year-old having impressed boss McCarthy during his week at Playford Road.

It seems likely Town and the former Ireland international, who scored for the U23s in last Monday’s 3-2 home defeat to Birmingham City, will agree terms.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace winger Sullay Kaikai is reported to be interesting Brentford, who hope to take him on loan.

The 21-year-old, who was watched by Mick McCarthy earlier in the summer, was erroneously claimed to have been spotted at Portman Road on Saturday watching the Blues defeating Preston.

I must be an old fashion supporter that does not slag off a player who is going to wear are colours. If they are rubbish then they get moved on.i think mick has brought in a few players over the years who have not be supporters cup of tea but some have worked out well.lets see want the next couple of days bring and then get behind are team.

How much are Fulham and ? Looking to pay for Derby's Martin
He would be a great replacement ....even if he played for Norwich for a short while

Let's face it guys...the owner doesn't care any more. His shiny new toy isn't shiny any more. It used to sit proudly on the mantelpiece but now it's in the spare room.

I don't particularly like MMs tactics on the field, but I do feel sorry that he isn't being backed by his own boss.

Let us wait until midnight 31 August then pass out "judgement"...between now and then, let MM & TC (and Milne) do their job...

Agree with the let's wait and see comments but I'd also add if you read the Newcastle fans views on signing Murphy the majority are underwhelmed by it. Let's just wait and see what happens and back whoever comes through the door

I think if Town had had a clear plan in terms of building a team around its once vaunted youth policy then we would have had Rhodes and Marriott building a future and probably scoring goals for us. The fact that we are only looking at cast offs and has beens illustrates the decline and simple bad management of our club. Best and Knightly....no thanks

McCarthy brings in Knightly and shuffles the pack to accommodate him with his other favourites and old mates,,
Blues1) Noel Hunt was not a good signing like a lot more of MM different class players//////in my eyes MM different class =below standard.

Pleased with our three other signings this season so lets hope he doesn't revert to the down and outs brigade again for christ sake he just got 3m for murphs.

Well at least fans aren't writing off any potential new signings before they have even signed let alone played for the club!......Oh!!!!

If we do sign kightly surely that means Sears will be moved to a central position which all the fans have been asking for? All i would say is wait to the window has closed and after the next game pass judgement on if the signings are a success or not.

Best deal ever would be a loan for Adam Armstrong from Newcastle

Surprised that was not part of any Murpht deal cos he would be a great replacement young hungry and knows where the net is

It amazes me, that a player who was not good enough for Derby, Blackburn, Newcastle, Coventry, Yeovil, Rotherham, Brighton, Sheffield Wednesday.... is all of a sudden good enough for our club?

Journeyman. Tried and tested, and as good as a chocolate teapot.

Kightly would be a fantastic addition, and would provide support for Grant Ward.

Kaikai to Brentford? Makes me laugh.

Is there anybody left that played for MM at Wolves we haven't been linked with or haven't signed.. sure the tea lady is still available.

Not exactly the players to tide the dwindling support at PR...

For all these football manager " experts " and the like can we judge Best should he sign after he's off / running and not now please? Christ alive.

Alan Lee anyone? Was superb and cost naff all.

Sam Parkin / Tamas Priskin cost some £££££ and was greeted with excitement, remind me what either achieved?

4 in 10 starts for a poor side last season. He could be okay.

Cresswell, Mings, and now Murphy all bringing in a tidy sum but little or nothing invested in players equals to Town going nowhere fast and with attendances falling year on year the dream of returning to the promised land is a mere fantasy! It's a crying shame so many think it's great to just be also rans forever treading water in the championship!
I and thousands of others had enough months ago and don't go accusing me of not being a town fan I've spent thousands watching town over 40 years.

A number of fans questioned the signings of Vesali , Henshall, Toure, Baijner, Coke , Stewart , Nouble , Digby, Oar,Malarczyk , Yowert, SEB , Sammon , Hunt x 2 , Tabb , Douglas as not being good enough for a promotion wanting team or injury prone and past their best did MM know best as an experienced manager then ?

To have concerns over players who have been released not for financial reasons but due to injuries or lack of form when we are trying to sign them is surely justified as we are the paying supporters and the club has again received more in revenue from selling than buying for the third season in a row in the summer transfer window ?

Not impressed by first rumours---lets pray and hope they are a smokescreen.

Is it now a rule that to play for this club you need to have played for the manager before----I am afraid I do not trust him or his judgement (saying that does that mean I get a pint of lager in my face?)

Prove me wrong Mick.

Add James Alabi to that list. There are probably a few others too.

No one questioned Oar / SEB they were waxing lyrical about both so don't even try and give us that. Not every deal works out but Vaseli looked a reasonable punt with his past record too.

Others sure Toure a bit left field but Mick is somewhat limited in what he can sign.

IPSWICH SIGN BEST

Leon Best has penned a one-year deal with Ipswich after impressing during training.

The striker arrives as a free agent after leaving Rotherham at the end of last season.

...another player impressing whilst training, Best certainly a player to have signed 5 years or so ago but now?
