Needham Market Youngster on Trial
Tuesday, 4th Oct 2016 19:19

Town have taken Needham Market youngster Max Booth on trial, TWTD understands.

Booth, 17, came through the academy at the Ryman League Premier Division club and has become a regular in their first-team squad this season, making two starts and five sub appearances, scoring once. He recently signed a two-year deal with the Marketmen.

The midfielder isn’t the first Needham Market academy scholar to spend time with the Blues.

Last season defender Keiran Morphew spent two spells on trial at Portman Road and impressed Mick McCarthy while playing in the Town U21s but not enough to be offered terms.

Town's U23s are set to play a behind-closed-doors friendly with Southend United on Wednesday.

Speaking last Thursday, manager Mick McCarthy said he would look to arrange a midweek game with Jonny Williams, who played 45 minutes against Liverpool on Sunday, again expected to be involved.

Oh and I forgot to mention Chambers. That kind of speaks for itself! Seems like a nice guy who tries his best (he deserves full credit for that), but I'm afraid he's just no right back.

midastouch-You did mention Chambers in your previous post. Most of us agree that he is no right back;but presume you don't rate him at centre back either.I am not sure about that ,one way or the other, because he has been played in his preferred position so rarely recently, under he who must be obeyed,as he is always right,

I rest my case how many times has this comment been made before?

Midass.
I'll let the manager decide - It's his job, not ours.
And you blatantly are having a dig - there's no point denying it.

So Gcon, are you saying it is beneath us paying fans to question the manager on team selections even after several games with next to no chances created? I certainly wasn't having a dig at you whatsoever. I asked politely for your views (note the please). I just wondered what was your verdict, hence the questions so we could perhaps have a polite exchange of views. I appreciate some still believe McCarthy is beyond reproach but unless we start to score a few goals and pick up some much-needed points then those numbers will decline further yet. Some long-term supporters of McCarthy came out against him following recent matches. It is hard to deny there is a growing trend of discontent swirling around the club of late and I would argue with good reason. Anyway, let's see what team he picks Saturday and let's hope we return to winning ways as we really don't want to be losing to the likes of Blackburn who have been struggling badly this season. COYB!

Seasider. I rate him more as a CB than a right back. And to be fair to Chambers he's only done what he's been asked to do. It's handy to have him so he can revert to CB when we have a few key injuries as we do now. But while it might be useful now, once our CBs are fit again, I expect he'll resume playing right back again and it's blatant for all to see that he's there for the taking whenever he comes up against a tricky pace player who knows how to beat his man. The Reading game springs to mind. The weakness is apparent and it is being exploited far too much by the opposition we face.

I think Mick is an old-style manager, while that has some merits it's hard to deny the game has moved on. Look what Brentford are achieving with their stat based analysis.

As it possible to program a computer to beat Kasparov at Chess then I am sure it is possible for a modern club working alongside a forward-thinking modern manager to use computer analysis to improve team selections and transfer policy. Brentford let Douglas go because his stats no longer added up. We've got the ass end of him. I think we should enter the brave new world with a young manager who will fully embrace the modern technology and methods that will get us moving in the right direction again. I expect McCarthy would be too stubborn to adopt the statistical element and edge that Matthew Benham advocates and expects from his managers. If we don't move with the times we get left behind. Or does Mick still know best? If so why are we sitting so far behind Brentford in the league? It's not like they have spent a lot, they are just boxing a lot more clever than we are. Discuss? :-)

Hey Coolcat, not having a dig but you put a thumbs down on the Brentford statistics point. Do you not think it's the future of football as many do? Just curious as I think it would help give us a much needed edge against opposition that ignore such details. Cheers.

It cannot be in any manager or coaches manual to constantly pick the same players every game for consistency. If it's not working it needs to change. Every team has different strengths and they need to be matched or bettered in order to win. Chambers is no match for someone like Lua Lua or other pacy wingers. Freddy will continue a drought as long as he gets no service and feeds of scraps. Last season some were praising the Academy players. Give them a chance. They may turn out to be able to do a job like Emmanuel. If we are to have home grown talent they need to be given a chance.
