Forest Linked With Skipper Chambers as Final Day Gets Under Way
Tuesday, 31st Jan 2017 09:37

A claim that Blues skipper Luke Chambers is being targeted by his former club Nottingham Forest is the first transfer link involving Town as the final day of the transfer window gets up and running. Clubs have until 11pm this evening to sign players.

According to Sky Sports News, Forest are in talks regarding the signing of Chambers, 31, who left them for the Blues on a Bosman in the summer of 2012.

However, even if there is interest from the Tricky Trees, Town are highly unlikely to allow their captain to move on, particularly with central defensive options limited at the present time.

Adam Webster is set to miss the rest of the season, while Tommy Smith is another few weeks away from a first-team return.

Chambers’s contract is up at the end of the season but the Blues have an option for a further year with manager Mick McCarthy recently describing the Kettering-born defender as “important to me as captain” after previous reports of interest from Wolves.

The former Northampton man admitted his frustration that a new contract was yet to be offered earlier this month, but in the past Town have tended to trigger options towards the end of seasons and then enter discussions regarding extended terms.

Speaking yesterday afternoon, McCarthy said he was unaware of interest in any of his players.

Town are understood to be working on a number of potential deals ahead of tonight’s deadline with McCarthy still searching for a striker to replace Daryl Murphy who departed for Newcastle towards the end of the summer window with the Blues boss appearing to have given up on persuading Preston to part with Jordan Hugill having had a £2 million bid rebuffed last week.

Possibly a big chance to increase his wages, but I would rather keep him till the end of the season due to defensive injuries.
I think both Chambers and Berra will leave in the summer, but until then stay put unless of course we get a daft offer.!!

If he's going to be given a fair crack at CB he'd be worth keeping, but if Mick is going to just keep him there simply for short term cover and then insist on switching him back to right back, then it's not a great fit. He's pretty woeful at right back. So if could sell him to save him from being done time and time again as right back then we may as well, but if Mick is going to finally give him another fair chance at CB then he'd be worth holding on to. As a right back he's a liability, but as a centre back he looks more comfortable and assured.

Looks like he is gone. 1.1 million with negotiations of James Thorne to come the other way.

Opinion on the Forest forums is mixed as to value of signing LC. Interesting comment taken from there (below) - is this where we are with Chamber now?

"Do we get the Luke Chambers who played with so little spirit at the end of his tenure with Forest or the Chambers who seems to turn up every game for Mick McCarthy? Perhaps we ought to sign Mick as well to get the best out of LC".

If Berra has one foot out the door it would not be in the clubs interest to let Chambo leave now or in the summer. He is a very good Championship CD and a reassuring figure for Smith, Emmanual, Webster and Knudsen. We need his experience at the back.

Hoping this is just agents stirring up interest, with his deal up in the summer. Can't afford to lose him without a replacement at this late stage in the window.

Big fan as I have said on here many times. We all know he is decent at this level as a CB. I think he has played well overall since returning there - to be honest I thought he played well against Lincoln & he needed to because Berra was dire.

Good attitude & always committed. Played out of position but got on with it.

Agree with all the comments about lack of planing from the club. It's Groundhog Day again. Who thinks we are going make any significant signings? I hope we do but I bet we don't!

If he goes good luck to Chambo..

COYB!

Chambers is at an age (32 at the start of next season) and stage in his career when he has to prioritise maximizing his security of contract. If Forest or anyone else offer him say 3 years against a one year extension with us he would be mad not to take it or at least to use the possibility to squeeze an extra couple of years out of town.
No one could blame him for leaving, particularly given the crap he gets from a vocal minority on here

I'd be absolutely gutted if this happens

not many players have the passion Chambo does

No more loans or short term deals. We need permanent longer term signings. For now.

No real info on James Chance. Forest have been looking to get him out on loan to league 2 club so rumour seems unlikely. Couldn't get into the Macclesfield team while on loan there for a year and never scored a senior goal. Really hope rumours aren't true. This transfer window is turning into a joke.
