Quartet Could Win Caps
Friday, 24th Mar 2017 10:44

Town quartet Kevin Bru, Tommy Smith, Andre Dozzell and Tristan Nydam could all pick up caps over the next 24 hours.

Bru’s Mauritius open their 2019 African Cup of Nations qualification campaign away against Comoros in Mitsamiouli at midday UK time before facing the same opposition at home on Tuesday.

Paris-born Bru, 28, has previously won seven caps for the nation he qualifies for via his parents.

Dozzell and Nydam, both 17, are with the England U18s, who take on Qatar in the second of their friendlies at the Aspire Sports Village in Doha this afternoon having beaten Saudi Arabia 2-0 in the first on Wednesday.

That game saw Dozzell take his U18s caps total to seven, while Nydam was an unused sub and will hope to make his debut for the Young Lions today. They face Qatar again in another friendly on Monday.

Tommy Smith and New Zealand are in action against Fiji in Laukota in the early hours of Saturday morning in the first of two World Cup qualifiers against the same opposition with the second game in Wellington on Tuesday.

Smith, 26, has previously won 29 caps, scoring two goals, but will be making his first All Whites appearance since November 2014 having recently returned to the international fold.

New Zealand currently top their qualification group and look set to progress to the next stage where they will meet the winners of the other Oceania qualification group in a two-legged play-off.

The side which wins that will face the team which finishes fifth in the South American qualification group in an inter-confederation play-off for a place at the finals in Russia in the summer of 2018.

Wake me up when the International break is over please! That would be one small blessing if we do go down, we won't have to wait so long between matches every time England play another pointless friendly! And it doesn't matter how good we look against Germany, we still play rubbish when the major tournament comes around regardless! And all this talk of some England fans being unsure about travelling to Russia due to the fear of being attacked by Russian Ultras. Well we haven't even qualified yet so why even worry about it until then! If we end up needing a Play Off match against a decent team like France to qualify for the World Cup I'd say we'll be left supporting whichever team we pull out from the work sweepstake instead! ;-) And at least the old England teams under the likes of Robson and Hoddle could make it to a pen shootout, now they struggle to even get out of the group or get into extra time!

Haven't been really gutted about England losing a match since Italia 90 in the semis or Euro 96 in the semis! Those two hurt but since then I've been pretty numb to it all! Ever since Gazza stop playing for England it's been like watching paint dry!

In fact a midweek international friendly is about as exciting as a midweek match at Portman Road these days! :-(

So, the male population of Mauritius is just over 630,000. I don't know how many of them are professional footballers but I doubt it's more than half a dozen at most. Kevin Bru is 28 and yet despite this presumed lack of competition he has only won 7 caps ! What a sad reflection upon the current state of our squad at ITFC !
