McGoldrick: One of My Most Important Years
Sunday, 22nd Oct 2017 17:39

Striker David McGoldrick says this is one of his most important seasons with his Town contract up in the summer and with the Republic of Ireland facing Denmark in a World Cup qualification play-off next month.

“This is one of the most important years for me, no doubt about that,” McGoldrick said in an interview in today’s match programme.

“I’m out of contract and there is no option on that either. It’s down to me and the club what happens next year.”

He added: “I have not been offered anything by the club yet but if that changes then obviously I’ve got to look at it. I have a lot of respect for the club and the staff here.

“My family are back in Nottingham, so I have to think about that. I’m 29 now and have probably got one or maybe two contracts ahead of me before I’m in the real world, as they say!

“It’s a short career, football, so I know it’s a big decision for me ahead but, as I said, it’s not something I’m worried about. I will deal with it when I come across it.”

McGoldrick, who hopes to be part of the Ireland squad which takes on the Danes in Noember's two-legged tie for a place in Russia next summer, says it was his decision to return to Town between the recent qualifiers against Moldova and Wales.

“I wasn’t in the matchday squad for the Moldova game and that was going to be the same for Wales,” he continued.

“I had a chat with [manager] Martin O’Neill and asked if I could go back and be with my family and he was fine with that, there were no problems. I have not given up on my Ireland career at all.”

Reflecting on the possibility of playing at next summer’s finals, six-times-capped McGoldrick added: “A lot can happen over a season and if we get to the World Cup what a carrot that is. Ireland have not seen the best of me.”

Much like our wonderful manager well past his sell by date and not as good as he thinks he is otherwise a bigger better club would have been in for him by now.
If we can get anything for him in January I say take it because he's not going to be staying and if he does it will take up valuable finances which could be used on a player for the future.

Stay fit, score goals = new contract. Simples.

So I'll say goodbye now then.

........ he's another player who cannot be too happy with being played out of position for much of his time under McCarthy - he is injury prone, always has been, but is there much incentive to come back from injury knowing full well that you will be bunged out wide or wherever McCarthy decides to put you ?

Extremely talented player, who in the right position can orchestrate a game - sadly never has been made the most of under McCarthy.

Sorry McGoldrick - you join a far too long list of players issued the same treatment - get away before it's too late, unless the Dino leaves, then who knows ? you may get a new lease of life, and spend far less of your time on the treatment table ....... !!!

Didzy has been a rare ray of light over the past few seasons and I will be gutted if he departs at the end of the season, or before. The Norwich game was a rare off day for him and it's unfair that he's taking stick in this column. Supporters need to ask themselves how would we feel if we were playing in a team of inferior players and given no encouragement by the manager to play attractive football. The long term need at this club for a creative central midfielder has impacted negatively on Didzy more than any other player.

Didzy is a bit of an enigma. Had all the skill in the world with hall at his feet however apart from his first season here he has been largely either injured, unfit, lacking in end product ( goals.... he is meant to be a striker!), and is painfully slow.

Why then this cult hero status? It's about producing that quality/ promise, on a regular basis. McGoldrick rarely has.

He is probably the most expensive player in our books , and yet £for appearance ratio is the least value for money. I truly regret the day ( as no doubt he does), Town declined that reported £7m Leicester offer.

Now in his final year of his contract, like all professional players it seems, he starts to make noises about “ his future”! Well maybe ITFC needs to consider its future and dispense with this expensive, by and large, disappointing, injury- prone flop! See ya Didzy!
