Ex-England Boss McClaren Linked With Town
Sunday, 25th Mar 2018 10:16

Former England boss Steve McClaren is claimed to be top of Town owner Marcus Evans’s list of potential successors to Mick McCarthy.

The current Blues boss is expected to leave at the end of the season with his contract up in the summer and, according to a report in The Sun on Sunday, Evans hopes to tempt McClaren, 56, to Portman Road.

The former Middlesbrough, FC Twente, Wolfsburg, Derby, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle manager is without a job at present having ended a short spell as a coaching consultant with Maccabi Tel Aviv at the end of last year.

McClaren’s name is unlikely to be the last speculatively linked with Town in the weeks to come with McCarthy’s summer departure now appearing inevitable.

As previously reported, Evans is believed to be keen on former skipper and coach Tony Mowbray, who he has twice come close to appointing Blues boss in the past, however, the 54-year-old is currently riding high in League One with Blackburn Rovers and might prove difficult to prise away from Ewood Park.

Ex-Manchester United defender Jaap Stam, 45, who was sacked by Reading earlier in the week, is also understood to be among those in Evans’s thoughts as he looks to appoint McCarthy’s replacement.

Tony Mowbray stats by comparison, are quite impressive, increasing at each of his managerial posts.

Northstandveteran.....please don't underestimate Ipswich Town FC stock and sand standing in the football community. Yes we have fallen on hard times in the last decade or so, but ITFC, is highly regarded in the Football world. Not least the fact that we have a reputation for allowing its managers to manager.

I hope that you are correct Arnie. But as a previous poster wrote, " Is managing Ipswich a better prospect than Wigan? "
In the case of Mowbray, would leaving Blackburn for Ipswich be a career boosting move? Why would the England under 21 manger leave for Ipswich?
We must remember we have been a very average team for many years. I only hope that in the wider footballing community we aren't considered a very average club. As lifelong supporters we know how unique and special this club is but do others still feel the same?
Perhaps if Evans were to give the new man money to spend it may become a more attractive proposition but whoever comes in ( I am personally more concerned that McCarthy is still here ) it is going to be a huge task to turn things around.
And again, really not favouring an experienced manager or an up and coming man from the lower divisions. All I know is that one more year of McCarthy and this club really will be in the s##t.

Even if McCarthy has been a total disaster, please not McLaren...cut from the same cloth. A new young talent for once or bring back someone wed to the Ipswich Town way of playing football like George Burley.

Better bring a brolley with you Steve !!!

Most of us want Mick gone;but are divided on a replacement,if in fact it is forthcoming.

I am cool on this,as wont be able to influence a successor; but hope that Mr McCarthy will depart asap.

It could be that Marcus is waiting, as he has somebody lined up who is already under contract;which would be the best scenario.

Keeps life interesting

While Tony Mowbray is a good former player and deserves respect for that he was also, like MM, a defender. I would like to see someone who might have been an attack minded midfielder or striker if we want to see more positive football. While George Burley was a fullback he also had an attacking mindset and of course Joe Royle was a striker.
I like the look of Danny Cowley and Paul Cook or failing that MM being handed c10m for next season and being told he is to change his approach for home games and that unless we get promoted it will be his final season.

Ha ha ha wow. He would actually be one of the better candidates as well. I'll behonest I have supported town all my life. My first game was at home to stoke in 1982. My friends dad worked for fisons so I had a lovely introduction in a box followed by a autograph hunting tour of the bar. The autograph sodden programme I'd still very dear to me. Names like Wark, Butcher,Osman,Burley,Gates,Ocallaghan,Cooper all adorn this great and dearly cherished momento.
I am so sorry to say THOSE really WERE THE DAYS!!! We are not the club we were 36 years ago, we are not the club we were 16 years ago!!!!
When will people accept that we are now a mid table(at best) championship club. That is our budget and that is our ability level.
We all dream of the premier league or a cup run but come on let's be honest with ourselves!!!
I can no longer attend games due to work commitments and to be honest the games I have attended I wish I hadn't because the football I have witnessed I admit is awful to be fair. If I paid every game and paid my money (as I have done in the past) I would be calling for change.
My concern is that while I accept that a change is probable (I do think Mick has done an amazing job in the circumstances) I am very very concerned that all the messages on here just say MIck out but come up with very few better alternatives. I have to be fair and not wishing to be disrespectful but the few candidates banded around are laughable... mccalaren (really) the Cowley brothers (ummm hopeful because youthful energetic but to be honest would they play an expansive game when facing teams like West Brom et al with remit of don't get relegated) Hoddle great fit but can anyone see that?? Keegan (walk away king) taricco (????) Mowbray (failed at boro and more worryingly Coventry) the Dutch guy (we all love the Dutch don't we but for every muhren there is a Marco holster!)
I am not suggesting I know the answer at all. All I say is while I also agree Mick's time is up let's not be disrespectful to the job he has done and accept that his inexcusable tirade at the fans at narwich was a human response to the lack of respect I think he is due for the job he has done.
Answering my own question, if Mick goes who do I want in charge next season? Pearson, Klug, Hoddle, Ruud Gullit?? Phil Parkinson, Harry Potter, Houdini, Paul daniels. I don't know but I know a club in league one such as ours will suffer hugely maybe fatally financially.
