Sherwood in Contention for Town Job
Monday, 7th May 2018 14:15

TWTD understands former Tottenham and Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood is a serious contender for the vacant Town manager’s job.

Blues owner Marcus Evans began interviewing candidates to succeed Mick McCarthy last week with Sherwood among them, but doesn’t expect to name his new boss until late May or early June.

Sherwood’s most recent job was as director of football at Swindon between November 2016 and June 2017.

Prior to that he was manager of Villa from February 2015 to the October of the same year, during which they reached the FA Cup final but were beaten 4-0 at Wembley by Arsenal.

The three-times-capped full England international’s first job as a boss was at Tottenham between December 2013 and May 2014 having previously been a member of the White Hart Lane backroom staff.

The 49-year-old, who played for Spurs between 1999 and 2003, had initially been assistant first-team coach under Harry Redknapp before becoming their technical director, during which time he ran their U21s side.

In addition to his link to Redknapp, one of Evans’s long-standing contacts in the game, Sherwood will also be well-known to David Pleat, another of the Blues’ owner’s associates, while Town caretaker-boss Bryan Klug was working at the Spurs academy during the Borehamwood-born former midfielder's spell coaching at White Hart Lane.

Sherwood emerging as a leading candidate for the Blues job is unlikely to prove universally popular with Town supporters given his playing history with Norwich City.

He made 82 starts and six sub appearances for the Canaries, scoring 13 times, between July 1989 and February 1992.

Sherwood, who also played for Watford, Blackburn, with whom he won a Premier League winner's medal, Portsmouth and Coventry during his playing career, is currently ranked as a 33-1 outsider for the Town job with Bet Victor. More on the latest betting here.

Urgh NO. I have no idea. But then, I don't really care.
But go on, humour me, exactly what is false about my claim?

The Burley and Butcher combination is a dream team. They both represent the best years for Town and would bring back enjoyment and faith to the club. Please Marcus, don't even think about Sherwood !!

Agree that whoever is appointed will not please everyone. But I do think some combinations will upset fans more than others. A majority of fans would get behind a Burley/Butcher combination for example. Sherwood? Not sure.

See Jim Magilton is down to 40-1. Now that would be an odd one :)

I have this on very good authority from someone inside the club. Sherwood really impressed Evans in the interview, he spoke about developing youth and building a system similar to tottenham. However, Tim wants to bring in all his own team and such a huge overhaul has giver ME cause for concern, so would be unlikely that he will be offered the role.

ME is reluctant with Paul Hurst, he is focused on Shrewsbury and ME wants the new manager to be solely focused on Ipswich. I would expect an announcment on Mark Warburton to be announced soon.

Hi Blueboy1981. Sorry this is long! For what little it's worth here are my thoughts. I've started so I'll finish, please bear with me if you can endure!

I think as long as the new manager delivers the goods the fans will unite but if they don't then it's highly likely divisions and disagreements of opinion will continue. That's prob why it's best to get a new manager who is more of a unifying force (as PJewellisaGod suggests above) rather than one that could be potentially more divisive.

As long as the new manager gets us up the league I'm sure all of us can get fully behind them and past disagreements will quickly be forgotten. But if the new man has us languishing down the wrong end of the table by Xmas then I fear the fans will remain more divided than united. It really is a tall order to get this appointment right. Marcus going public (albeit for a fleeting moment) seems to have extended some goodwill towards him which let's be honest was running almost on empty prior to his interview. He's had his say, and I was pleasantly surprised by what he said even though let's not forget he is a PR man so it would of naturally been well scripted. Nonetheless, I'm prepared to give him another roll of the dice but he really does need to get this appointment right as his last ones have left a lot to be desired. That said, I was impressed with Mick McCarthy for a while and I have to credit him for keeping us up so I will concede that was a much better appointment than Keane or PJ. Nonetheless, it became clear to me it had run its course after a while and I was concerned that when it had become pretty obvious the Mick bandwagon had come off the rails Marcus seemed nowhere to be seen. He was much more brutal in acting against Magilton for example so why did he stay in the shadows so long when the Mick adventure seemed to finally go sour?

I'm all for giving managers a fair crack of the whip but sometimes you can just tell it's not likely to get any better and some relationships just become untenable. In truth none of us can really be sure who will be the best man to take us forwards. My heart says George and Terry. It might not work but I'd be prepared to give them a chance as I think it's worth giving them a crack of the whip. I'd much rather give them a chance than Tim Sherwood who seems a most curious person to be interviewing.

Let's hope Marcus knows best and whoever he appoints take us forward together on an exciting adventure as let's be honest, fun adventures at Portman Road and on the road have gone missing for too long over the last decade or so. We've flirted occasionally with the impossible such as our play off season and our league cup run, but sadly there has been a lot more rough than smooth in the last decade or so and as such I pray Marcus has a plan to finally put things right.

I'm cautiously optimistic but I do fully recognise the new manager will have their work cut out given their budget will be limited. They need to trust in the youth and at times the U23s have shown us they deserve more of a look in, yet on other occasions they've come up short and made me doubt if they are ready to bridge the gap but if anybody can get them to bridge the gap then it's probably George Burley who invests in youth and gives them licence to develop. George would encourage whereas it seemed to me Roy Keane scared them so much it inhibited their development as he probably took all the fun out of playing.

Anyway, that's enough of my waffle, I'm hoping Marcus gets this one right as we're desperate for the good times to return as we're well overdue something to really shout about again! COYB!!!

@ itfcitk
sounds feasible. judging by marcus' interview he wouldn't be keen to take on a whole new backroom team no matter how polished the interviewee might of come across. there is also an art to an interview. just because somebody can talk a good game doesn't always mean they can actually deliver such and such in reality. i hope george burley at least gets an interview as i think his appointment would be well received overall by the fans. nobody is going to be 100% accepted but i think george would be better received than a lot of the other names being mentioned.

@midastouch

I love Burley, he was a great manager and always happy to have a chat. He's been out of the game a while and with the squad Ipswich have would he be able to play his style of football? With the lack of funds available i'm not sure he would be able to bring in the sort of player he would need.

I would hate for George to come in and things not going well and potentially tarnishing his great name.

Sherwood certainly doesn't tick all my boxes by a long chalk - and to suggest changing the whole management / coaching set up - is DEFINITELY a NO, NO, NO.

Into touch Sherwood - let's move on, and most definitely WITHOUT him.

I agree itfcik, it would be a shame if Burley came in and it went wrong and his reputation was soured as a result. However, he knows the risks and he must believe in his ability to make an impact. It's a tough one as some people have said on here is it heart ruling over head. But I like his track record of bring youngsters through and I think that's what is necessary to take us forwards. I'm not 100% it wouldn't end in tears but I think it's well worth a calculated punt. I really wouldn't mind taking a punt on Gary White either.

Gcon ......... keep up your record - another nondescript post that makes no sense, or constitutes any kind of debate.

Your sulking will ease with time.
