McCarthy Set For APOEL Nicosia
Friday, 30th Oct 2020 13:36

Former Blues boss Mick McCarthy is close to being appointed the new manager of Cypriot side APOEL Nicosia.

McCarthy, 61, left his previous job as head coach of the Republic of Ireland - his second stint in the role - in April. He left the Blues after five and a half years in April 2018.

A tweet from APOEL revealed McCarthy would watch their weekend fixture and hold talks.

“The company APOEL Football informs that it expects the Irish coach Mick McCarthy tomorrow in Cyprus, so that the discussions regarding the possibility of cooperation are completed,” it read.

“Mr McCarthy will be at the GSP Stadium to watch the APOEL-Apollon match.”

There is no place for Alanism on this forum.

There are many Alan's out there that form an integral part of society and contribute to the rich tapestry of our multi named society.

Alan's throughout the country work hard, pay taxes and shouldn't be stereotyped by certain 'Alanists' who's ignorance still makes them think that they can post such intolerance on this site.

Suggesting that Alan's be mentioned in the same sentence as nuts is just wrong.

Those that wrote the headline, Brazil goes nuts have no idea how deeply it hurt Alan on that day, contributing to alcoholism and premature baldness.

Good luck to him. I was a “Mick out” fan but personally would take his ugly defensive style of play while pushing for the championship play offs rather then sitting in league one.

At least we won't have to listen to his drivel as a TV pundit/co-commentator for a while. Sorry but I have no time for the guy.

There are some bitter people on the internet.

Best of luck to our most successful manager in 10+ years - fact.
Best of luck to the manager who signed players who made us profit (if not for Evans) - fact.
Best of luck to the manager who had us punching above our weight - fact.
Best of luck to the manager who finished higher than anyone else in recent memory - fact.
Best of luck to the manager who gave me my greatest away day as a town fan - fact.
Best of luck to the manager and his assistant who were very kind to my father and I - fact.
Best of the luck to the manger who justifiably told some idiots to f**k off.

Chrisswailes, most successful manager? he alone cut the attendances at Portman Road in half with his belligerent attitude. Well gone, and yes I for one would rather be in league one than have him represent Ipswich Town Football Club, remember his foul language to his own supporters many of which were youngsters.

What i'd do to have u back mick... you were a legend for the club, no money what so ever, and make us flirt with the playoffs. oh how i know you were laughing your hole off when u left

If only town fans had turned their anger on the rightful cause of our stagnation and degeneration, ME rather than the man trying to do an impossible job with nowhere near enough funds. Town fans you know ITFC is still YOUR club right?! It's like you think it belongs to ME to starve and kill off as he sees fit and you've washed your hands of responsibility! The way you've bent over and let ME shaft your club reminds me a bit of cuckholding...

The first half of your post is 100% correct, and all fans should recognise & be thankfully for the truly exceptional job Mick did in saving us from an almost certain relegation and then stabilising us in the Championship to the point of making the playoffs. That was absolutely down to great management & organisation of the players he had & great use of his knowledge, contacts & standing in the game to bring in free transfer signings.
But we also have to recognise what he was presiding over for the last 2 seasons of his time here. The football was that bad, the attendances were dropping by thousands, the atmosphere was negative, gloomy & even hostile; Mick's management (including his media commitments) was at the core of that too, and it couldn't continue.
The fact that Paul Hurst was a disastrous appointment, who made terrible decisions in the transfer market & in terms of his man management, does not change the reality of what preceded him. Just because your new girl/boyfriend steals from you, does not mean you should have stayed with your ex, who was cheating on you.

LB , I'm not given to post script comment , but I have cause to wonder why MM in his last two seasons was perceived in the manner you describe .
Remember , though he had ‘discussions ‘ with ME ,he never revealed in any detail the actual content ,always stressed the rights of the owner ,and so far as I recall never complained but accepted these were the terms on which he took the job .
Looking back now, could it be MM , too , was justifiably ‘p'd ‘ off with the hand he was given ,but tried, struggled even , to manfully get on managing until finally the negatives overcame the positive ? – and that , respectfully , includes the supporters ,amongst whom we witnessed behaviour totally unbecoming of ITFC !!
PH was never ‘big' enough for the job and very quickly proved his inadequacies , enough said !

Such a lovely description BA81.

My goodness I've led a sheltered life 😂

Yes, I was one of the Mick out numpties.

Apologies for thinking the club and fans deserved better.

We have now got what we wished for.

Cr8p football in league one opposed to cr8p football in the championship.

Oh and crowds might have dwindled under Mick but there were 13,000 more supporters under his guidance than there will be today 😉

I say good luck to him in his new job.

Been here 2 seasons too long - fact
Dullest football on display at PR since John Duncan or possibly worse - fact
Any manager telling the fans to F-off is a big no no - fact
Easy life for a manger with a club with no ambition but just trying to retain their Championship status and on a supposed £1M a season - fact

Don't get me wrong MM's appointment at the time was needed and he brought in some good freebies (at first) and some decent loanee's but ME's extension to his contract in Feb 2016 was plain wrong - fact.
There a factualised post :)

Every week it was turgid play for a draw, with mick bigging up the opposition, and then insulting the fans if they dared to question his tactics. Yes he found some real bargains and sold them on for massive profits, that was his one redeeming feature.

NSV I wanted Mick out too but I never ever saw him as the main issue.

mib - Keep telling yourself that! All of my points were facts, backed up by league positions and statistics, whether you like to accept it or not. I'm sorry the bad man said a terrible word to you though! A swear at a football match? Why I never! What next? Beer? Calling the referee something bad? IN MY GROUND? MYYYYYYY....

Mick did a cracking job with little money. The abuse he got was out of order and we saw how well he did to always have us top half when Hurst came in. Very few of Micks signings were poor:..

Chriswailes, One fact you very nicely forgot to mention was the continuing dwindling absence of the fans, FACT. Couldnt stand the man and am glad he left when he did, pity it wasnt sooner.

Thanks to Marcus Evans and his ridiculous continuous decision making...ever since Magilton was given the hoof.

Mick kept us competitive and made some inspired signings in the transfer market....especially considering the limited resources. But the style of football was absolutely dreadful to watch and eventually the relationship broke down with the fans.

Although Lambert has us playing a far more attractive style of football.....we are still suffering the same issue that we had under MCcarthy......a lack of shots on goal.

Under both managers i have never felt we could play one of the better sides in the league and dominate. Hoping that will change one day
