Walton: Two Great Seasons Under Cook at Wigan
Monday, 30th Aug 2021 16:01

New Blues loan keeper Christian Walton says he’s looking forward to getting to work at Portman Road having teamed-up with his former Wigan boss Paul Cook.

The Brighton glovesman, who joined Town on a season-long loan from the Seagulls earlier today, was on loan with the Latics when they carried off the League One title in 2017/18 and helped them to stay in the Championship the following season.

“I had two great seasons playing under Paul,” Walton told iFollow Ipswich.

“The first was in this division and we kept a good number of clean sheets and went on a really strong run on the way to promotion.

“I then went back to Wigan and we had a goal of staying in the Championship and we achieved that.

“I'd like to think I can bring that experience to this team. It looks like a really good balance between experience and youth in the squad and I think I'll fit into the dressing room well.

“I just want to help us try and win as many games as possible and I'm looking forward to getting to work.”

Very very best of luck settling in, and settling down in this team – they sorely need you !
It's almost mind bendingly difficult to judge or understand why and how we've made or delayed the choice of a replacement keeper capable of doing a confident job between the posts ; very sadly our present man looks totally lacking in authority and seems to have little spring in his heels !
Do hope CW is already fit for the season ahead ,and that he'll be an outstanding first choice – for its a bit puzzling to see how we arrived where we are now !

Welcome aboard the roller-coaster that is ITFC,Christian!

Hope this pressure helps Hladky grow too as historically he's a decent keeper that with the right support could be much better than we've seen of him so far. Hope it allows him a bit of breathing space to settle in & get his head straight & hands where they need to be.

Let's hope he is better than others that have played for Cook ie Evans I think if wolfy is taken out of back four with our new defender along with a new keeper and hopefully Donacien at right back until KVY can get his fitness sorted we can stop shipping the goals would also replace Evans in midfield to give more cover

Welcome Christian, I hope and expect you will be a roaring success as we will certainly benefit from your experience and presence. I for one hope you will become as good for us as Bart was - which seems a long time ago!

For the questions as to why leave this signing so late, I think we need to remember that the players we want need to be available - and so I assume they have not been until now. 2 goalkeepers was stated as the plan from the beginning and with names suggested/rumoured and then not happening, I can only imagine those doing the recruitment have found this as frustrating as the rest of us.

With a defence of Walton, KVY, Edmundson, Burgess and Coulson we should have physicality, speed and good distribution from the back. I agree with the posts that say we need the commanding 2 midfielders in front of the back four, let's hope we can achieve that with the players we have.

I don't know how on earth Cook thought that Hladky was good enough for L1.

He got rid of our best keeper to Peterborough so hope he's got this one right. It's such a key position and has already cost us 4 points!

It's amazing when players leave the club they all of a sudden become good.
