Town Confirm Davis Signing
Monday, 25th Jul 2022 20:16

Town have completed the signing of Leeds United left-back Leif Davis on a three-year deal with the club having an option for a further season.

TWTD revealed earlier this month that the Blues had made an offer of £1 million mark plus a further £500,000 in potential top-ups for the 22-year-old, who had a year left on his Leeds contract.

The final fee is officially undisclosed but is likely to be in excess of that figure with discussions between the clubs having been ongoing for a number of weeks while Davis has been away with the Leeds squad on their pre-season tour of Australia.

It's almost certainly in the top five fees paid for a defender by a League One club.

“I am delighted to be here,” Leif told iFollow Ipswich. “This is the best step for me at this point in my career. I want to play games and help the team in any way I can.

“I'll always give it my all when I am out on the pitch and I can't wait to meet the fans at Portman Road.”

Manager Kieran McKenna added: “We're really happy to have Leif with us. This is one the club has worked hard on this summer.

“He is a player that fits the bill of what we want. He is young, hungry, athletic and technically very good.

“Leif has played games in pre-season and we are hoping he will be ready to make an impact early on.

“He'll get plenty of support from the staff and fanbase, and I know everyone will be excited to see him play.”

CEO Mark Ashton said: “Leif is a brilliant addition to the group. He is hungry to achieve success at the club and we are thrilled to have him on a permanent basis.”

Newcastle-born Davis was with Morecambe’s youth set-up as a schoolboy before joining the Elland Road club’s academy in July 2018.

Davis, who is 6ft tall and can also operate as a wing-back and at centre-half, spent last season on loan at AFC Bournemouth in the Championship, making 10 starts and five sub appearances, a move which was initially viewed as a precursor to a permanent switch.

However, injury limited his involvement and he returned to Elland Road before the end of the campaign.

For Leeds, Davis made six first-team starts and eight appearances from the bench.

Town have already signed one left-back this summer, former Morecambe man Greg Leigh, however it had been expected that they would look to bring in a second before the start of the season.

Davis's arrival as the club's sixth signing of the summer may well see Matt Penney move on before the end of the window.

Town are still continuing their pursuit of Leicester striker George Hirst but face opposition from Championship clubs for the former Sheffield Wednesday youngster from sides understood to include Blackpool and Blackburn, while Portsmouth remain keen on another loan for the 23-year-old, who was with them last seson. We understand at least one of the Championship clubs has made an offer.

According to the Portsmouth News, the Foxes are asking £2 million for Hirst, who is the son of former England international David.

The Blues are also still eyeing a return for ex-loanee Bersant Celina, whose switch to Turkish side Kasımpaşa broke down last week, but with no progress believed to have been made over the weekend.

It has been suggested that we were already strong in that area. If so why was KVY used there when he was obviously out of position, even though he did ok. We also brought in a loanee even though we had Penney and dare I say it, Kenlock. KMcK has identified our weaknesses and potential targets brilliantly and the club has backed him. When was the last time we could say that. What's not to like. COYB

He's good. A good few notches above Thompson.

What this also means is that the teams that double-teamed Wes Burns towards the end of last season will have to do the same on the other flank as well. Good luck with that. It also makes 4-4-2 a viable alternative to the usual 3 CBs. Especially when Hirst signs. Blimey, my bladder can't stand the excitement. COYB

Nomore4. A perfect example of how some fans have no idea what's happening g at the club. Ashton is nof the person dealing with the catering. And the guy who is, whose name escapes me right now( the guy we got from Norwich city), has said it will take a bit of time to get it right. And it was unlikely it would be sorted at the start of the season.

Another great signing. Really need a goal scorer next. Not fussed over Celina he is a luxury player i dont think we can afford to play in this league. Too in and out.

@blues1 Ashton is the CEO. The CEO is head of all departments.
Having hot snacks available throughout half time, not running out after serving 6 people…..
There is more to cold snacks than a chocolate bar and a packet of wine gums…..
Training staff to carry out the task…..
And offering decent beer isn't rocket science even for the man from Norwich City…. Without Ashton having to involve himself. This Saturday yet again more fans walking away from Kiosk queues than joining. Shocked at West Ham game to see zero improvement….worse even if that's possible.

Whilst I can see the sentiment of Grinch, this is'nt an either or its a both. We know Harness was around £600k (payable over 3 years so i hear), and Leif will have been signed with the Downes money.
The reality is we will have had a 7 figure summer budget which we've barely touched so there is still inevitably money available.
Once again this deal, whilst being talked about three weeks ago, has been concluded and released under the radar, i fully expect Mark Ashton to land his striker and for him to be in place soon.

He comes across well, seems like a well-adjusted guy.

I think it's very positive that the manager was clearly determined to sign him, even though Leigh had already arrived. He clearly has plans for the team, and he obviously doesn't want to compromise.

It's a shame for Penney but I suppose he's a player that wasn't signed by Kieran McKenna, so maybe he wasn't happy with what he had.

It's a summer that keeps giving. Some really good additions, a club that has come out of the wilderness and a fan base that has regrouped and gagging for success. We all know of the false dawns so we must scoop up the points in early season to put in the bank for when, like all teams, we have a little wobble. A golden period is emerging.

You never know what to believe about transfer fees. The Leeds MOT site suggests that we have only paid £900000 for Leif.

The big question is will he play on Saturday. He will be assessed in training to test his fitness and touch. Leigh has looked impressive in the pre season games and i think he might just get the nod while Davis is bedding in at the club. He could even play both on the left hand side but this is highly unlikely i think. What ever happens McKenna's got a massive task keeping all these players happy it's a balancing act and i don't envy him.
