Burns Left Out of Wales Squad
Wednesday, 9th Nov 2022 19:08

Town wideman Wes Burns has missed out on a place in the Wales squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

The 26-man squad was announced this evening with Burns among those not making the cut.

Former Town striker Kieffer Moore, ex-loanee Jonny Williams and Brennan Johnson, the son of former Blues frontman David, are all included.

Wales are in Group B along with England, Iran and the USA, who they play in their first match on Monday 21st November.

Burns, 27, broke into his national team in the summer when he won his first three full caps.

The winger was subsequently called up to the party for the September internationals but didn’t play a minute of those games, although he felt the experience was worthwhile.

Speaking after Monday's 3-0 win at Bracknell, Burns said he had no clue whether he'd be named or otherwise but if he wasn't he knew he'd have work to do at Portman Road.

“I’d love to go, honestly I would, I’d love to go,” Burns said. “If I get the call, brilliant. If I don’t, I know I’ve got a big season here at Ipswich.

“I think we’ve said it many times, the aim at the end of the season is for Ipswich to be in the Championship, be playing Championship football next year, so it’s a win for me either way. If I go, brilliant, if I don’t, then I know I’ve got a job to do here.”

Pratts on here think they now better than Rob page!
Burns is a great player for us albeit a bit off form lately!
Sorry for wes but a big plus for us! Hopefully burns will be bang on form and not be to disappointed about missing out!

Very mixed feelings about this, obviously as a Town fan its good news, but Wes is a great lad and it would have been great for him to me the trip, even if he didnt get to play.

Sad for Wes, but not surprised. Page is heavily into staying loyal to his established players - so much so that he's chosen some injured ones. I think they'll only get three games between them anyway.

Probably for the best, a bloke with a pony tail would likely get a lengthy custodial sentence over there!

Gutted for him would have thought good enough to be in the squad must be very disappointed.
Johnny Williams ahead of him just doesn't sound right surely

He probably would have made the WC squad if it had been played summer 2022 as his form in the 21/22 season was excellent. He's been very inconsistent so far in 22/23 (not sure what's happened to him and JD down the right) and has also been a defensive liability this season so can't say i'm surprised. Morsy, Walton and Burns were guaranteed to start last season but Burns isn't a guaranteed pick atm.

Burns has that pace - at our level he draws across centre backs and his presence opens up other areas of the pitch. I would say the reason why he does not go (maybe why he plays in Div3 ) is because you cannot guarantee his end product - he would have been a sub - one chance - would you expect him to make the right decision ? Obvisouly Page doesn't.
I fear Wales with Keiffer Moore at the back post - Not sure we will deal with him and we failed to in the Covid friendly before he went of injured If Kane plays we should win.

Sorry for Wes but the best way to be in contention for Wales in future is to play at a higher level for his Club side, i.e. Ipswich in the Championship - a double incentive for Wes.

Have sympathy for burns of course. But fact is, he's generally not been playing particularly well this season, so notxreally a surprise. Tho does seem odd that players such as allen gave got in ahead of him after being injured. But then, all managers have players they trust, and will always pick them. Will give burns the chance too, yo get back to top form with us. So definitely a plus for us

Wales must have great quality to leave out Wes.

Wales have picked 2 players from L1 and amazingly 2 players from L2.
On that basis Wales have made a big mistake leaving out Burns imo

Sorry Phil but your headline is off the mark, he was not left out, he was not picked to go.

Itfchorry: Geraint Williams won a single cap for Wales whilst an Ipswich player. Something like 12 caps over his career.

Ipswich have had a player at every second World Cup since 1986 so this will retain that pattern:

1986 Butcher
1990 none
1994 Guentchev
1998 none
2002 Holland
2006 none
2010 Smith
2014 none
2018 Knudsen
2022 none

It is imperative we have one who plays in 2026 or I'll turn into a lamppost

Once Ipswich are promoted, he will have plenty of chances

Lather. Donacien hasn't been a liability at all. Has been fine defensively. But his passing hasn't been the best for a few games now. If there's a liability defensively then it's edmondson. No coincidence, that since he came back into the team, weve started conceding more goals.

Burns does a specific job at Ipswich very well.
His wide play has excelled, as well as a good goal scoring record. Maybe Wales don't need this type of player.
This season we have potential down both flanks & as shown by Monday night we have potential all over the pitch.
Mind you the Page picks are baffling, when he picks the chap from Portsmouth plus someone from MK Dons who I have never heard of

Unlucky Wes but with continued form from you and the rest of the lads we'll be back in the Championship next season and I dare say you'll be pushing for the next Euros and World Cup campaigns.
