Burns and Broadhead in Wales Squad
Tuesday, 14th Mar 2023 12:12

Blues duo Wes Burns and Nathan Broadhead have been named in the Wales squad for their Euro 2024 qualifiers later this month.

The Welsh take on Croatia at Stadion Poljud in Split on Saturday 25th March and then Latvia in Cardiff three days later.

Broadhead has previously been called up but so far without winning a senior cap, while Burns won three last year.

The pair will miss the trip to Barnsley a week on Saturday unless the Blues have a third player called up, which seems certain to be the case with Greg Leigh expected to be named in the Jamaica squad, while Sam Morsy is on Egypt’s preliminary overseas list, which has happened on previous occasions without the skipper being included in the final party.

Meanwhile, former Blues loanee Jonny Williams, currently with Swindon, has announced his international retirement as he approaches his 30th birthday having won 33 full caps, featuring in three major tournaments.

Let's hope Leigh gets called up.It would be a massive loss to be without both Burns and Broadhead in such an important game.Their replacements would almost certainly be Jackson and Harness, I know who Barnsley would prefer to be up against

I i wouldn't be overly concerned if we had to do without both Burns and Broadhead for the Barnsley game, both Harness and Jackson are more than able deputies for them plus Harness owes Barnsley one after having his legitimate goal chalked off at the home game where Barnsley were second best for much of the game.

Haven't received my Barnsley ticket yet. Does anyone know if the ticket office is holding them back waiting to see if the game is rearranged?

Barnsley also have a midweek game against Wednesday the Tuesday before our visit when we have the full week off.

Jackson can do a job out wide as we know & is defensive minded too....Broadhead would be an automatic starter now & would be missed imo....Greg Leigh will get called up , but hasn't been on the bench either as late.....Morsy won't get in the squad for Egypt ....so i reckon we should play it as it think we will still win the game...COYB...ITID..

I'd prefer this game was off, Broadhead and Burns are key and having Barnsley and Derby in consecutive away games should be avoided if we can. The downside is a two week gap, I've no idea if Barnsley have players players going off to internationals so it might not even be our call

pleased for them, but wary of injuries we really cant afford to lose anyone at this stage of our pursuit of promotion.

I'm more worried about Morsey getting booked on Saturday. I think it's his last game to get through to avoid a suspension. If he's not available for Barnsley then I'd like to see it rearranged, otherwise I'd rather it was played. COYB

We have paid the price before for postponing games which we could have accommodated. With the squad we have, we can and we should play the fixture as slated UNLESS Morsy gets called up as that is a much bigger deal. However, as mentioned, that might be irrelevant if he picks up a Yellow on Saturday. Assuming Morsy does not and is available then let's take them on and keep up our momentum....and hopefully knock theirs! COYB, positive mindset, this is ON!

We're in great form and have quality cover all over the park. Let's get it played and won!

Shocking that we are having another international break during a season that has already been intimidated by a world cup, our promotion push is more important than these internationals and i bet they both sit on the bench for both games

Let's be honest, we probably wouldn't have beaten Bolton on Saturday without Burns.Does anyone really believe Jackson would have found Hirst, with that pin point pass, for a great goal.

agreed with @PortmanTerrorist - Morsy is the most important player we'd miss here. I think Jackson could cover perfectly well for Burns. Broadhead would be a massive loss don't get me wrong but we need to keep this momentum going (assuming we beat Shrewsbury on Saturday!). Our record for games back after international break is very poor as well but then we are breaking records this season so who knows...

In other news, how is Jonny Williams only 30!!!!??????

With Everton struggling to score goals, I wonder if their fans regret the sale of Broadhead?

There are two games a week in April! Would a pure fixture pile up!
To call the game off whilst we have momentum would be a massive mistake! Besides hirst could start instead of broadhead (or harness) Jackson for burns!
We got pure qaulity in the squad! To call off the game would show a lack of confidence in other squad players!

Makes me laugh how fans say we should play the game regardless of international call ups. Yer, let's go in against an in form barnsley with 3 players missing. Maybe 4 assuming leigh gets a call up as expected, and morsy too. And with a new manager of Egypt, may well do. While Leigh hasnt been involved much of late, what happens if Davis gets injured prior to barnsley match? Would be suicide ro play the game. And wouldn't mind betting, those same fans saying we should play, if we were to lose the game, would be slating the club for not calling it off.

We'll definitely not play unless we have to (i.e. Leigh doesn't get called up). Barnsley are on a roll as much as we are, so no advantage in playing them now. What if they BEAT Wednesday - they'll be on even more of a high. What if they lose? They might be even more determined. By pushing the game to the end we deny them their momentum and place it in a horrendously busy month where our stronger squad gives us an advantage - it might even be a nearly irrelevant game for them.

We need to go into the Barnsley game with our strongest team. Losing Burns is like being without two players he does so much work for the team offensively and defensively. I like Jackson but he is what he is very good cover and McKenna thinks the same. Harness is out of form and couldn't hit a barn door at the moment and doesn't have the all round game of say Burns or Morsy both automatic choices if fully fit and not in McKenna's rotation system.

Very surprised that Burns is in, and we got the job done without him the other day anyway. The loss of Broadhead would be of greater significance, although he's only been a Town player for a month or two. Morsy would be the biggest loss but is nowhere near good enough to get into the Egypt side. I was lead to believe that our squad was deep and full of talent, so if we have to let's craçk on with whatever we have at our disposal.

Boo-urns, our best player IMO. A leader and we are lucky to have a world class player like him.

Don't know what pills youve been on SoCalTownFan but can i have some. I think people seem to forget that we're playing in a sub standard league and it's easier for players to impress at that level. Burns is a very good player but i think if he was world class he would be regular in the Wales team. Burns and Broadhead are only squad players for Wales and possibly need to be playing championship football regularly. Somebody suggested that Everton were wrong to get rid of Broadhead in their position but although looking good at our level is a long way off being a Premier league player as it proved by his long stay their under different managers.

V tough one for the club, this.

I'm sure KMK has a simple answer to it.

And in him I trust!

Chepstow , we got the job done without burns against crap opposition , but against better on Saturday we needed him. set up one brilliantly and put another on a plate which Harness missed so we do need him against Barnsley. It's annoying where this falls as we are gathering momentum but the points are so tight that to go in against a direct decent opponent undermanned would be a handicap straight away.

Steve_ITFC_Sweden added 08:26 - Mar 15
I admire the "let's go for them anyway" spirit, but putting my logical cap on, I think we would miss both Broadhead and Burns. I'm sure McK will make the right call, and rather him than me. It's a difficult one.
