Blues' Promotion Hopes Boosted Further After Owls Draw
Wednesday, 29th Mar 2023 21:47

Town’s automatic promotion hopes were given another boost this evening as second-placed Sheffield Wednesday drew 2-2 at Cheltenham Town having come very close to a third defeat on the bounce.

Aidan Keena gave the Robins the lead in the 62nd minute, then Alfie May added the second on 69, but the Owls hit back through sub Aden Flint in the 76th minute and then Lee Gregory on 87 to claim a point.

Wednesday have now taken only two points from their last 12 and are four points ahead of the Blues but with Town having a game in hand. The Owls are a point behind leaders Plymouth having played the same number of matches.

Tonight’s game ends a remarkable international break from a Town perspective in which Wednesday have been beaten twice, having previously been on a 23-match unbeaten run, and drawn once and fourth-placed Barnsley were also defeated, 3-1 at Exeter last night.

The Blues, who have won their last six, return to action on Saturday when they face sixth-placed Derby County at Pride Park.

Wednesday face Lincoln, who are 14th, at home and Barnsley host third-bottom Morecambe, while Plymouth aren’t in League One action as they play Bolton in the Papa Johns Trophy final on Sunday.

I guess that this is the tough end of the season, when squad depth and quality really starts to count.

Win on Saturday and I think we are the ones.

Westy, everyone knows the rules before the season starts. You could say that it is equally cruel to have the team who finished fourth on goal difference not get promoted. That's just the way it is. I personally am a fan of the playoffs. It makes positions 4, 5, and 6 worth something and keeps the season interesting.

Blimey! another game played from a rival (there half slapping the games in thick and fast)...yes surprisingly another slip up from Wednesday.

Just hope we don't have a blippy patch as we've had a week off...Derby need to getting going after recent poor results.

Massive game Saturday now, although i think they are all big games now, realistically.

Derby away is a tough assignment, but navigate through that and then it's three home games out of the next four games.

Think the outcome will rest on what occurs in games 43 and 44, against Peterborough and Barnsley respectively.

One game at a time between now and then

For me, it's all about the performance on Saturday. Carry on how we left off and we'll get promoted.

What's amazing about this season's league one is we've only lost 4 games, won 6 in a row and aren't top two. If we win Saturday I'll start to feel it's our year.

Other teams in the mix are now feeling the pressure and have dropped points in games nobody would've predicted. We are playing our best football of the season now which is so reassuring as a fan. I truly believe that we are the best team in the league after our January additions. We now have to beat Derby and keep Didsy quiet which is a tough ask. I have complete faith in KMK and his team. This has been a really enjoyable season so far and I believe it's going to get better

@Marinersnose Didsy was utterly anonymous against Peterborough the other day. Sure, he might want to prove a point (although it was always his decision to leave, based on the fact that he wanted to move closer to family).... Predicting a narrow and nervy 1-0 Town win.
