Former Blues Boss McCarthy Leaves Blackpool
Saturday, 8th Apr 2023 11:46

Former Blues boss Mick McCarthy and his assistant Terry Connor have left their roles with Blackpool after less than three months.

McCarthy, 64, was handed the reins at Bloomfield Road on January 19th following Michael Appleton’s sacking but has failed to improve the Tangerines’ fortunes, winning two, drawing three and losing nine of his 14 games in charge.

The Seasiders sit second bottom of the Championship, seven points from safety with six games left to play.

A statement on the Lancastrians’ official website reads: “Blackpool Football Club can confirm Mick McCarthy and Terry Connor have both left the club by mutual consent.

“With results on the pitch not improving in recent weeks, the decision has been agreed by both parties that a change is needed.

“The club would like to thank both Mick and Terry for their efforts and wish them well for the future.”

McCarthy added: “After recent performances and results, I have thought long and hard and feel this is the best decision for everyone concerned with the football club.

“I've loved my time here and thank everyone for their support. I wish everyone well going forward.”

U23s coach Stephen Dobbie will take charge for the rest of the season, assisted by Matt Blinkhorn and Steve Banks.

I think McCarthy with the backing of the current regime would have been successful, however the brand of football would have been bloody awful and lacking in entertainment value, I for one don't miss him and enjoying watching us in league one and hopefully the championship ship next season,in which I think we will do well if we get promoted

each to their own , he wasnt for me , didnt honestly think he would be any more successful when he left us and he hasnt proved otherwise, football has changed in many ways since his hay day.

I won't bad mouth him. He tried his hardest to get results for us but his style was not what we wanted. Best of luck to him, I think retirement is beckoning! Football has definitely moved on since his successful years.

Saved us from relegation, but saved us from what? Dreadful era, dreadful football.

Eloquently put Bazza, not so eloquent Annie. But generally agree with both.

MM and TC were after their sell by date when they left us. Awful football philosophy and completely outdated in todays game.

Those awful managers of the same type ie McCarthy, Pulis,McLaren,Allardyce and Pardew are now hopefully a thing of the past.
All on the merry go round, year after year, getting paid a fortune, just to save teams from relegation, with their terrible brand of football. All have been sacked more times than I've had hot dinners.
Good riddance the lot of em.

Just like Nicosia, Blackpool ended up paying more on replacing footballs lost, than player wages.
Apparently 1 in Cyprus never landed….just kept travelling.

Gforce, you mention McClaren as one of your "thing of the past" managers. I think you'll find he currently fills the role left vacant by our guvnor at Old Trafford! 2 years since our change of ownership and things are finally coming up roses, time to move on and bury our recent history. I'm sure we can all do it if we try, even BA81!

He did well at first, saving us from relegation and then nearly getting us promoted. However, the style of play was dreadful and I shall never forget the shambles against Lincoln. Thanks to Mr Evans he had little money to play with, but he didn't help himself by driving the fans away.

I am genuinely baffled by so much positive sentiment towards MM on here. 1. His brand of football has ALWAYS been awful at whatever club he was. 2. He told ITFC fans to F*** Off at Nodge (which I get as he was getting dog's abuse) but when questioned about it he blatantly lied! 3. Took the Pi** again out of ITFC fans, ridiculing us for being in the league he helped condemn us to.
Caveat all this with Marcus Evans lack of vision/investment. But ask yourself this, When gamechanger did as their name suggested, who would you have in charge Mick or Kieran? I know we have the benefit of hindsight, but what, in MMs career history, suggests we would ever have seen a good footballing team and full houses at PR as we have done lately? Honestly, I am so glad all those lording him up have had no say in the progress of this club with their we don't need to change anything attitude.

Bit of a managerial merry go round Gforce. All a bit of a joke at times, particularly when you look at the likes of Chelsea and the baffling decision to bring back Lampard.

I was hoping Mick would keep Blackpool up, just so we could destroy them next season and shove it down his throat.

I'm thankful that McCarthy steadied the ship at a time when we were truly awful throughout the club and he did restore a certain amount of pride in my team. However, the idea that we should have been grateful for his ongoing tenure of turgid, agricultural anti-football still irks me to this day.

Sometimes you have to take a step backwards to move forward again and none of us would swap where we are now for struggling in the division above with little hope of progression. I love my club but I'm here to be entertained and to see us with a chance of winning something, not grinding out bore draws with 11 men behind the ball, regardless of division. Mick attempting to poke fun with this "sexy football in league one" comment just shows he will never understand football fans and is just a bitter yesterday's man.

I once spent three hours in Blackpool, which was quite long enough.
