Delia and Husband Issue Statement on Car Incident
Friday, 5th Jan 2024 18:59

Norwich City joint-majority shareholders Delia Smith and Michael Wynn-Jones say they are saddened at the lack of an apology from Town following the incident in which their car was hit by a beer can prior to the derby at Portman Road last month.

The car conveying Smith and Wynn-Jones, both 82, closely followed the Town coach to the ground, Blues supporters having gathered in their thousands to welcome their team to Portman Road ahead of the match, which ended 2-2.

The car was hit by a beer can on its way through the crowds and Smith was reported to have been shaken. No complaint was made to the police.

Now Smith and Wynn-Jones have issued a statement thanking Blues fans but criticising the club.

“Delia and Michael would like to thank all the Ipswich Town supporters who are still sending messages of support, and even flowers, after the event to apologise for what took place at the derby match on Saturday, December 16,” the statement reads.

“There has been a very good relationship with Ipswich Town during our tenure of 28 years, and we are saddened that we are yet to receive a public apology.”

It’s understood Smith and Wynn-Jones had been given the opportunity to follow the Norwich team coach, which was given a police escort and entered the stadium via the old Staples site at the opposite end of the ground, however, instead opted to make their own way to the game.

Norwich had been informed of the coach welcome which had been planned by fans’ group Blue Action for the Sir Alf Ramsey Way/Constantine Road area around the ground.

Town said at the time that they would assist the authorities in any way they could but are adding no further comment.

Trying to stay as neutral as possible on this.

The incident itself should be condoned but could also have been easily avoided if advice had been followed. Honestly, don't know why the advice wasn't followed. But regardless, not good for that to happen to anyone. It was a mistake, which had consequences.

Doubt also that Delia expected this story (saying she was surprised there was no formal apology) to make headline news. It's a non-story, so can't understand the media hype about it.

It's an unnecessary distraction from what's going on. This is the most important season for us in decades, let's not get sidetracked by strangeness.

@blueboy, the club doesn’t need supporters like you! Since the new owners, alongside the dynamic McKenna, have propelled our club forward, you’ve spent the whole time, spouting nonsense and negativity! You’ve had your ‘hissing fits’ before..unfortunately I’ve no doubt you’ll return! As for Delia, get over yourself! Totally blown out of proportion….another one struggling to accept our club's change of fortune ! Ringing any bells, blueboy?

Like most of the comments on here I feel the same.
Who advised them that it would be great to drive through
a blue action home reception?. No doubt we've apologised but to seek further political capital is poor. How about acknowledging the stupidy of your action.

Ignoring common sense, a recipe for disaster!
For starters...
It's not the clubs fault that Delia wanted to follow the party bus
In the main
We have amazing supporters
Dessert
A trifle jealous!

Was this deliberately maneuvered by Delia Smith & husband. Whatever it was it was crass stupidity on their part. I couldn't see Ahton & O'Leary or our owners doing anything like this, it could actually be seen as an act of deliberate provocation.
One good thing is Blueboy is cutting ties with ITFC or so he implies but we do know he's prone to telling porky pies.

I think enough has been said on the matter and whilst it was unsavoury, to expect a public apology is presumptuous. Town supporters condemned the incident, so did the club so that is where it should end. I think norwich are beginning to feel the cold wind of change in Anglian football and are struggling to keep the pace and need this publicity. Let it rest now...

I don't condone the behaviour and actions of throwing a beer can at the car but really what did they expect... following the Ipswich team coach in knowing there will be thousands of ipswich fans who dont think to much of her given historical comments she has made. In my opinion it was an 80 odd year olds way of antagonising the ipswich fans.
I followed behind the team coach in at the Exeter game last season and had 2 kids in the back of the car who loved the atmosphere and I had people tapping my car and offering me beer! (Which I responsibly and kindly declined) they crowd were great and everything about it was fun and Blue!!
Delia should and would have thought of the potential turmoil her actions would cause and in my opinion she was asking for that one empty beer can and was extremely LUCKY that's all her car was hit by! Authority's should have known it would cause an issue and should have made her wait until the crowds dispersed.

UP THE TOWN!!!
