Röhl: Big, Big Difference
Saturday, 16th Mar 2024 20:57

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl said the “big, big difference” between where his side currently find themselves and the Blues was evident as Town romped to a 6-0 victory at Portman Road.

Röhl, who has masterminded an improvement in the Owls’ form since taking over at Hillsborough in October but with the South Yorkshiremen still second-bottom, took a positive approach against Town, switching from a back five to a back four, but the move backfired badly.

“It's a big defeat and a big disappointment,” the 34-year-old German admitted. "When I come to a place like this, I never come and say I am scared about the opponent, I always want to try something.

“But today we saw the big, big difference from where we are in our position and where Ipswich are.

“The whole picture, it starts at the facilities, the pitch, the team. It shows a big, big direction of where Ipswich want to go and it's good to see.

“For us it's about learning from this game. We came here with our best four offensive players in front instead of a back five.

“I want to be brave, I want to create good ball-winning situations, good transition moments. We saw some moments but then you see the difference.

Reflecting on his approach to the game further, he added: ”You have two things. You can come here, park the bus and try something or you can try. This is more my identity to come here and try something and be part of the game.

“This is my responsibility, how we go about the game. I want to always be front-foot instead of backwards. Today I take this big defeat on my side, it was 6-0. I protect my players and we go forward.

“It was for me about how we can score, not how we can defend. We want to give them a challenge and they did it better. It is why I take responsibility for this decision.

“You can come here and play with a 5-2-3, like we did in the second half; we conceded three goals with the back four and with the five. We didn't do our basics right.”

Good honest reflection. Not only on our awesome team etc but their performance also. Good luck Wednesday sadly you are a million miles away from where you should be. We had years of decay. This boat is sailing. We might not get to the promised land this year (even though we are fighting way above where we should be) but we are on the right track.

those are some very flattering comments about us from Rohl. I just wonder if he sees himself as a potential successor to KMcK if a big club scoops him away from us?

It did feel like quite a naïve way to set up against us. It is the kind of attitude that will win you lots of matches, but lose you lots of matches too. You can see the gulf in class when you see how many 1-0 or tight away wins KM has overseen. The only time we looked totally lost was at Leeds.
To be fair, Wednesday were getting in good positions and playing good patterns at 1 and 2 down, but either the shooting was not good enough or Hladky pulled off some great saves or the defenders marshalled and blocked them very well. In the long run it would probably we best to accept a 2-0 scoreline and save the loss to goal difference and hope to nick one.

LegendofthePhoenix, if he does then he needs to improve. He cannot always just go gung-ho. Must be more mindful of the opposition. To play you’re own game whatever the opposition is okay if you have the ability to do so but he needs to realise that SW don’t

Tough one for him to take, but as they say you learn more about your team from a defeat than victory. I'm sure he will be successful in the long run as a young manager.

I thought the first ten minutes Wednesday looked a threat but as soon as we scored the heads went down but I wasn’t expecting six goals. Great all round performance! Hutchinson, Morsy and Broadhead were the outstanding performers for us but well done to the defence.

there's only one negative from yesterdays game, a master class in how not to play us, other teams will take note!

I like this guy, still very young and it showed in yesterdays approach!

All this talk of KM leaving is actually underestimating kms intelligence, he is one smart guy and he knows he is not ready for one of the top jobs, which is clearly where he is heading. None of the real big boys are likely to offer him anything atm. He will stay and take us as far as he can! He is no Lampard, who could have done really well had he stayed at Derby, moving too soon can back fire both for players and managers.

He will want to finish his job here!

Thinks that was a application for the manager's job..could do a lot worse if there's a vacancy

Michael 101: “we could a lot worse”?
His team have just been ripped apart with an element of naivety.
He comes across as a decent guy but not at this moment, not one who would be anywhere near a consideration at this time I feel.

Dissboy you nailed it!

KM is 37 years old and taking the top job too early could be done by 40 like Lampard Gerrard and Rooney.

I keep saying this, but another ten years at 47 he will only then being approaching his prime.
