Leicester Thrash Saints to Go Four Points Clear Tuesday, 23rd Apr 2024 22:06 Leicester City moved four points clear at the top of the Championship with two games left to play following their 5-0 thrashing of Southampton at the King Power Stadium this evening.
The Foxes comfortably defeated the woeful Saints via an Abdul Fatawu hat-trick and one each for Wilfred Ndidi and Jamie Vardy.
A Leicester win at Preston in their next fixture on Monday would secure promotion regardless of results elsewhere over the weekend, which could see them up before then anyway.
Leeds are in action at QPR on Friday with the Blues, who have a game in hand on the three teams around them, at Hull City on Saturday evening.
Southampton, who host Stoke City on Saturday afternoon, are six points behind second-placed Leeds and can now no longer make the top two barring a miracle with their goal difference 19 worse than the Whites’.
It now looks like a straight fight between the Blues and Leeds for the second automatic promotion spot.

Leicester played ok but Southampton were WOEFUL. Their players should be utterly ashamed of the effort they put in tonight. Bunch of individuals with zero pride or passion. Walker Peters was dreadful tonight. Hope they turn up agsinst Leeds.

QPRvLeeds is now a massive game as far as we are concerned. If Leeds win, then I'm afraid it's almost certainly the play-offs for us.However if qpr can at least get a draw, then we'll be right back in it.

Results haven't gone our way but hey, wherever we finish it will be a result of our performance across the whole season and not 1 particular draw or loss. 3 games with 100% effort and we should be proud no matter what

2 wins out of our last three games and I reckon we will go up. Can see Leeds getting 4 points from their last two games, rather than two wins. We do have a tough two games coming up - to be honest I think Hull will be difficult, but hopefully Coventry will still have a cup hangover. Keep the faith everyone- it has been a great season and the lads and manager have given everything.
Gforce added 22:38 - Apr 23
On another note, isn't it just typical that Southampton chose to put in their worst performance of the season tonight. I hope they show a lot more pride in their final game at Leeds, but I doubt it. What their fans (who made the fairly long trip)made of the performance tonight, I dread to think.

If town win sat it’s irrelevant what what Leeds do, Leicester have one foot in the premier league now so it’s out of us and Leeds for 2nd spot…. KM will have the players up for these games. It’s ours to hold onto now, we’ve stuffed Hull and Coventry already this season and Hull will be tired from the game tomorrow night. With Burns back and maybe Hirst plus a rested Moore we will be very lively…. We are due a big win, hopefully it starts sat. Nothing to lose, town have been incredible and will get what they deserve this season (hopefully 2nd spot). If not I am confident we will win the playoffs, but let’s get behind the teams Sat and get the job done.

Just out of interest- should we fall into play-offs, I’m assuming we wouldn’t be able to use Ahadme or Ladapo if they returned from loan before the games? (would be useful to have extra striking options, but assume they are not in our registered squad so couldn’t play?)

GForce is a bit pessimistic. This changes nothing, except Southampton are now out of the race for the top two, which is a good thing. This beating has damaged their goal difference to the extent that Ipswich just need a point from 3 games to kill them off. So let's put them our of our minds. Sure Leeds can win on Friday and then put pressure on Town, but they might not. Either way, it's in our hands just as it was Sunday morning. Beat play off also-rans Hull, and Coventry and it's just a home game against relegated Huddersfield to go. Leeds would much rather be in our position than theirs. They are relying on us to drop points. Them dropping points just makes our lives easier.

Nothing has really changed. We still have our destiny in our own hands. We've spent a season high-performing. All that effort and hard work has come down to just three games. The players have had extra rest, physically and mentally, and come into these last three games knowing that if they play to the level they have generally performed at since August, they will be promoted to the Premier League. The task is black and white.

The sad thing is I can see us drawing with Hull losing to Coventry and a win on the last day, I can see Leeds winning at QPR but losing to Southampton and we will miss out on goal diff Then Norwich in the Play Off…..We need Two wins really, fingers crossed and we win all 3 and it won’t matter what Leeds do

Best case scenario for Sat I reckon is Hull draw at Coventry tomorrow night to give them the faintest sniff of their play off chase continuing only for a last min Norwich or West Brom.goal to seal the end of their season a couple of hours before kick off...

If we win our last three games we go to 98 points. If Leeds win their last two the best they can do is 96points.,.. so it is completely in our hands. There is of course the possibilities of losses and draws to mess up my scenario above however fingers crossed that we can claim second place in some style.... coyb

@Suffolk n Proud - Regardless of what happens between now and the end of the season we definitely should be proud, but to suggest results haven’t gone our way is fantasy. Had we beaten Watford & Boro we’d be all but up. That’s not me criticising the team but whoever doesn’t finish top 2 certainly can’t be using results not going their way as an excuse.

It’s the Middlesbrough game which we had to win. I knew that would comeback on us. We won’t beat Hull & Coventry away and unfortunately Southampton the team we were relying on have imploded. We have overachieved anyway so Norwich in the Playoffs we are due a win but McKenna will have to change tactics to win.

If we are good enough then we will go up. You don't get promoted through sheer luck alone, you get promoted by winning games and dragging out results etc. If Leeds pip us to second then it will be on merit and not luck. We both have two away games and one home in that order. Its all down to us whether Leeds go up, not them. They can win the next two games 10-0 and still not get promoted. Their destiny and our own destiny in totally in our hands. Luton finished third last season and went up so if we finish third, why cant we? Please no more negative thoughts, we have been outstanding this season and its not over yet.

Forget all the permutations, forget all the if only we'd beaten this team, forget about what others do. 3 WINS its in our hands, we come back fresh with hopefully Burns and Hirst back and our fantastic support...and well be rocking back to Prem!!

Leicester have gone now, that's not up for debate really. Agree that the Leeds QPR game is massive, I don't want to be a pessimist, but it's very unlikely that we win all three, two very tough away games with both clubs still chasing a slim chance of the playoffs - need QPR to squeeze a point out of Leeds on Friday, then 6 from three will do it. Those dropped points in the Watford/Middlesbrough home games are even more frustrating now, in hindsight. Anyway, if's and but's are all irrelevant now - a favour in shepherds bush Friday eve, and three points in Humberside Saturday night, and we'll be rocking and rolling.

It’s been said, that after some fairly poor form from the top three that ‘no-one wants to get promoted’. I think Leicester emphatically answered that question last night. If we really want it, we’ve got the manager, the squad and the ability to do it. Let’s go!

Was this a case of Southampton being resigned to the playoffs and not wanting to risk injury? Let's hope that Hull and Coventry are resigned to not making the playoffs and looking forward to the summer holidays.
Karlosfandangal added 09:43 - Apr 24
We need 3 win really as Leeds need to drop points. Coventry had big game against United and play tonight and Saturday and then us on Tuesday so a win against tired Coventry is a big possible. Huddersfield you would like to think we could win. So the Hull game a draw will not be enough

all the ifs buts ,permutations, theories of teams being tired or resigned to what ever [i dont believe that] is just loyal fans whistling in the dark. Not knocking them we all want to see a way of going up, but its down to our players ,recent performances have not been great and have not shown the passion shown earlier in season , Leicester and leads have both dug in now we need to do the same. The bad news is i cant see us winning all 3 games, The good news is i am often wrong with predictions . SO COME ON YOU BLUES .
