Burley Not Being Paid
Burley Not Being Paid

Former Town manager George Burley has revealed that he has not been paid by the club since the end of December. Town and the ex-boss failed to come to a settlement of his contract after he was relieved of his duties in October.

Burley said: "The League Managers' Association is dealing with the matter. I don't want to make a big issue of it or stir things up. I just don't want people to think the club is still paying me."

Towards the end of last year Burley disclosed that his salary had dropped by half on Town's relegation. The actual figure he was paid before and after promotion has been the subject of much conjecture with some reports claiming a £20,000-a-week wage last season and others a lesser figure.

Burley says that he is amongst the club's creditors, along with the likes of the Ancient House Press, the St John's Ambulance, Greene King, Gemini Travel and many others: "I am one of the creditors now. It's no great position to be in, but that's the situation.

"I will be treated like the rest of the creditors and will wait to see what the club will ofer to pay out. There is a conception amongst supporters that Ipswich Town Football Club is still paying me. They are not. They stopped in December."

Cluc chairman David Sheepshanks confirmed that Burley has not been paid: "George Burley has been paid in full from the time he left the club until the end of the year. I would not normally disclose anything further, but seeing as he has spoken I should point out that we made him an offer some time before Christmas to settle his contract.

"This was not accepted. We then made it clear that we were in no position to improve upon it, but we have heard no more from Burley.

"Payment was finally terminated with effect from December 31st after which it was intended to continue payment under the terms of any settlement that was reached. He was fully informed of this."

Town were due to make their first payment of three to Burley at the end of January, however financial circumstances dictated that the club were unable to meet the commitment.
