Bennett to Say No?

Town target Ian Bennett is set to turn down the chance to move to Portman Road, according to a number of reports. The 30-year-old is understood to be Joe Royle's preferred new first choice stopper.

Bennett, out of contract, has been offered a new two-year deal at Birmingham which is likely to be worth more than the reported three-year contract at Town.

The former Peterborough man has been at Birmingham for ten years but is unlikely to be Steve Bruce's first or even second choice at St Andrew's, however a higher wage may persuade him to remain where he is.

Royle has also targeted Everton's Paul Gerrard who spent a month on loan at Portman Road last season. Like Bennett he would face a drop in wages if he moved to Town. Despite having a year remaining on his contract the Toffees may be willing to let him leave on a free transfer.
