Davis Confirmed as Target
Davis Confirmed as Target

Town boss Joe Royle has confirmed that Wimbledon keeper Kelvin Davis is his number one target. However, a deal is not expected until next week as the Blues are still waiting to hear from the Dons' administrators before they will talk to the player.

Whilst on the pre-season tour in Sweden Royle seemed confident he could get his man but kept his identity under wraps, even though some journalists were playing guessing games with him.

Wimbledon administrators Grant Thornton have yet to come back to Town to give them permission to talk to the 26-year-old goalkeeper.

The Town manager says that he still does have other potential targets but that Davis is his first choice: "We have a shortlist of keepers we would like and Kelvin has gone to the top of that list.

"We are still waiting to hear back from the Wimbledon administrators that our proposal is acceptable; after that we will talk to the player."

Davis is still has another year of his contract with Stuart Murdoch's club and is understood to be their highest paid player.

He moved there from Luton in 1999 for £600,000, at a time when the Dons were in the Premiership. It is likely that the administrator will be keen to do a deal to reduce the crisis-stricken Dons' costs.

Town may have to pay a small fee, while matching his current deal may prove a problem. However, with a hard season looking likely for the proposed Milton Keynes club, Davis may decide that his career would be best served by a switch to Portman Road, even if it means a drop in pay.
