Town manager Joe Royle says he has not contacted Newcastle United regarding Darren Ambrose. A report this morning claimed Royle would attempt to land the ex-Blue on loan.

A move for Ambrose looks unlikely with an approach form West Ham turned down recently and the midfielder suffering with shin splints this season.

Royle says that he wants to bring in two loan players, one likely to arrive prior to the visit to West Brom: "I would like it to happen as soon as possible so that we can work with him in a team formation beforehand.

"Ideally I want to bring in two. I have a short list of people and there are several options. It's down to availability first, then money."

Should Town want a player from a Premiership club it is likely that his wages would be well in excess of the Blues' capabilities. However, clubs are often willing to pay a percentage of the loaned player's wage while they are on loan.

Royle has not ruled out targeting Aston Villa striker Peter Crouch or Manchester City's Darren Huckerby, a player he signed when manager at Maine Road.

Manchester United youngster Eddie Johnson is also being linked while young Liverpool winger Richie Partridge impressed as a loanee with Coventry City last season and may well be available again this year.

The Town boss says he is heartened by the weekend display against West Ham: "We are not that far away. There were some good signs on Saturday and at our best I know we are among the best in this division.

"We need a lift, though, and a new face or two will provide it. That's why I am looking and asking everywhere I can."
