Santos Set for Watford

Town central defender Georges Santos is likely to join Watford on a free transfer today, the Hornets enquiring about his availability after Saturday's game at Portman Road.

Santos, 32, now looks surplus to requirements with Matt Elliott on loan and John McGreal fit again after missing most of last season and the early part of 2003/04.

Richard Naylor and Drissa Diallo have pushed ahead of him, while Gerard Nash and Aidan Collins are also waiting in the wings for their chance.

Santos joined after leaving Grimsby on a Bosman last summer initially on a short-term deal but was offered a two-year contract when funds became available.

Manager Joe Royle told the club site: "We have given Watford clearance to talk to Georges about them taking over the remainder of his contract.

"We have five central defenders at the club and with young Aidan Collins and Gerard Nash pushing through as well, we have more than enough cover in that area of the pitch.

"It's a good chance for Georges to hold down a regular first team place but the decision is his and if he decides to stay, he will be welcomed back into the squad and be in contention to play like everyone else here."

In his short time at Portman Road the former Cape Verde international made 33 appearances for Town, scoring one goal at Cardiff towards the end of last year.
