Town reserves lost their penultimate game of the season 2-0 to Southampton at the Saints' St Mary's Stadium on Tuesday night.

The home side went ahead via a Brett Ormerod penalty in the seventh minute.

Ormerod was instrumental in the Saints' second goal, teeing up Arron Davies in the 61st minute.

Town went closest to a goal when Alun Armstrong was through one-on-one with keeper Paul Smith, the ex-Brentford stopper coming off best.

Midfielder Chris Bart-Williams struck a 30-yard second half freekick over the bar.

Their victory means the Saints now stand a good chance of finishing second in the Barclaycard Premier Reserve League (South) behind champions Charlton.

Town will hope to beat Nottingham Forest in their final game on Thursday in order to leap above Portsmouth and into 11th in the 15-team division.

Reserves: Price, Hogg (Synnott 70), Boardley, Mitchell, Collins, Diallo, Flack (Atay 70), Garvan, Armstrong (Patten 84), Craig, Bart-Williams.
