Royle Not Ruling Pair Out
Royle Not Ruling Pair Out
Monday, 1st Nov 2004 17:26

Town boss Joe Royle is not ruling either of the weekend's injury victims out of Tuesday's home game with Sheffield United. Fabian Wilnis strained a hamstring and Tommy Miller hurt a calf in the 3-0 victory over Preston North End.

Royle said: "Neither is being ruled out for Tuesday night's game. I would say Tommy has the better chance and we will try him today, but Fabian will probably need another 24 hours before we give him a go.

"I really believed Fabian would be out of it, but that is not the case. I'm pleased to say he's a lot better."

Should Wilnis not make it, Matt Richards will come in at left-back. Miller's absence would probably see Town switch to 4-3-3, with Pablo Couñago or Dean Bowditch receiving a recall.

Both Wilnis and Miller are in the squad but manager Royle says he will call in more youngsters if needed: "If both lads are out then I will look at adding either Antonio Murray or Darryl Knights to the squad."

Royle also withdrew skipper Jim Magilton against the Lilywhites but only as a precaution, the midfielder having been a doubt with a knee strain prior to the match. The Northern Irishman seems set to take up his usual midfield role against the Blades.

First choice keeper Kelvin Davis is back in training and will take a place on the bench and will probably play a reserve game before taking over from Lewis Price.

Sheffield United's main injury concern is new striker Danny Cadamarteri who has suffered a recurrence of a hamstring problem. Manager Neil Warnock is prescribing rest for the ex-Everton man: "This way we should be able to get 70 minutes out of him against Ipswich. If Danny can manage that then I'll be happy.

"His hamstrings are feeling a little bit tight because we've played a lot of games recently. There's nothing specifically wrong with them, they are just feeling the strain a bit.

"Danny is such an explosive, quick player that they're always going to be under
pressure. That's just the way these type of players are and it's up to us to manage the situation."

A serious blow for the Blades was midfielder Michael Tonge picking up an ankle injury last week. Better news is that midfielder Alan Quinn is back after a three-match suspension.

But other than Tonge and Cadamarteri, Neil Warnock says his squad is relatively injury free: "We've got everyone from the other night available, including Quinn, but Tonge is still struggling.

"Quinn comes back into our thinking, the management team will have a look at certain things, discuss it overnight and make a decision after training on Tuesday."

Tuesday's referee is Lee Probert from South Gloucestershire who has shown 32 yellow cards and five red in 10 games this season. In his second year as a league official, Probert has not previously taken control of either Town or Sheffield United.

Squad: Bent, Bowditch, Collins, Couñago, Davis, De Vos, Diallo, Horlock, Kuqi, Magilton, Miller, Mitchell, Naylor, Price, Richards, Westlake, Wilnis.
