Town's U18s lost 1-0 to Charlton Athletic on Saturday morning in a low-key contest at Sparrows Lane. Teddy Sheringham attended the match to watch his son Charlie in action for Ipswich.

Charlton took the lead in the 33rd minute when Lawrie Wilson grabbed his third goal of the season. After a neat corner routine from Charlton, Stevens chipped the ball in and Wilson glanced his header beyond Shane Supple.

Sheku Kamara had to be alert after a quickly taken free-kick from Ipswich could have resulted in a chnace being made. Ipswich took the upper-hand in the second-half and Town's Irish midfielder Owen Garvan came within a whisker of levelling the scores after his 25-yard free-kick hit the Charlton crossbar.

Hungarian goalie Szabolcs Kemenes was called into action when Town striker Danny Haynes raced through, but he was foiled after a great save at his feet.

Charlton made three substitutions in the last ten minutes; Gross, Tanska and Sodje all coming on. This showed the threat from Town; Charlie Sheringham causing Charlton's 16-year-old Finnish trialist Jani Tanska a few problems.

On 86 minutes, Town substitute Stuart Ainsley raced onto Michael Synnott's through-ball and he released a rasping shot that cannoned off the post.

It was not Town's day, and Charlton recorded their most fortunate win of the season.
