 Thursday, 19th Jan 2006 21:45 Town's hopes of retaining the FA Youth Cup won last May are over after the U18s lost 2-1 at Liverpool. The young Blues were unlucky to be defeated with Liverpool keeper Dave Roberts making a number of saves and Kieran Leabon having a late goal ruled out. The home side had Roberts to thank for the first half ending goalless, a save from a Chris Casement freekick the best of several stops. Liverpool went ahead with their first shot on goal in the 51st minute, Charlie Barnett finding Paul Anderson just outside the area and the midfielder shooting low past Pétursson. Ten minutes later the Blues were on terms when Stuart Ainsley hammered in a left-foot strike from the corner of the penalty area. The Reds went back in front in the 72nd minute when Ryan Flynn netted at close range from a Godwin Antwi pass. Ainsley came close to a second equaliser, the ball flying just wide, then on 80 Leabon had the ball in the net, only for the referee, unimpressive throughout, to rule it out for offside. Roberts once again saved his side late on, making yet another good stop from Darryl Knights. A decent performance from the Blues, without the likes of Owen Garvan, Shane Supple, Billy Clarke and Danny Haynes, and they probably deserved more on the balance of play. Particularly impressive for Town were defenders Chris Casement and Russell Short, and left midfielder Stuart Ainsley.
