Keane: Element of Unknown About World Cup
Keane: Element of Unknown About World Cup
Friday, 11th Jun 2010 08:58

Manager Roy Keane believes the World Cup is very open with several sides in with a good chance of winning. The Blues boss says there is an element of mystery about the competition, which begins today when the hosts face former Town loanee Giovani Dos Santos and Mexico in Group A (KO 3pm).

Keane told the club site: "I think a lot of people are not sure how the tournament is going to go. They are not sure about the conditions, the heat, the humidity, what state the pitches are in.

"It has a bit of the unknown about it but I still expect the likes of Brazil, Germany, Argentina to be there at the end. The Spanish as well. England have a chance but a lot depends on Wayne Rooney.”

The former Irish international says he is not particularly a fan of the group stages, believing the tournament comes into its own in the later rounds: “The competition comes alive when it's at the knock-out stage.

"I'll be watching games like everyone else and maybe there are realistic targets out there for us. Obviously it will be very hard for us to get one of the top players from the likes of Italy, Spain and Brazil, but from the smaller nations, why not?"

Tommy Smith and New Zealand open their Group F campaign with a game against Slovakia on Tuesday afternoon (KO 12.30pm).

TWTD Message Boarder Keno is still looking for participants in his World Cup Fantasy League, details of which can be found here.

Head and humidity? Look at the weather forecast. It's mid-winter in a seasonal country. It will be cold. I think about 5-10 degrees warmer than mid-winter in the UK so around 5-10 at night and 15-20 during the day.

God you lot piss me off. You're always looking to rip apart anything RK comes
out with. Your beady pedantic little eyes scouring every word for fault. Well Marcus, it's
heat and humidity not head and humidity. Wiseyblue, you have used question marks without asking a question. I'd sack you both.

question.

Well said leagueone, when it gets to the stage of stupidity why do they bother.I might slag Roy off but he is the manager and am 100% behind him to turn the corner but I suppose even if we were to win the title you would still have the same few findind something trivial to whine about.

Well Argentina won't do much because they have a deluded, arrogant, inept manager who doesn't stop changing his starting team...

RK should focus on bringing in his "4 or 5 identified targets" rather than pondering the difficulties of bringing in 'top Spanish/Brazilian/Italian players.' These sort of targets simply aren't feasible. If RK does want to sign someone on the back of a tournament, the group stages are where he should be looking.

Yes Roy, the World Cup is a bit of a mystery for you isn't it since you never bothered participating in 2002.

@leagueonescum - take a deep breath and count to 10... Now think - being critical of someone is not the same as being against someone. There hasn't been a Town manager I've been against but I'm often critical of individual decisions and comments many have made.

the trouble with the world cup is there is not much of a element of unknown.the seeding of the top ranking nations makes it all fairly pedictable in the group stages with the odd rare shock.seeding is unfair and discriminates against the middle ranked and lower ranked countries.why should brasil or italy be sheltered in the group stages ? because fifa couldnt handle the fact that a serbia or korea could get through and win the cup .if it was all just random draws.and the big money tv rights semi-finals /finals would attract no interest from europe if the big footballing nations were not involved in the latter stages.like all seeding in any sport it is unfair and corrupting..money destroys all fairness in a tournament where the random draw should decide who plays who

Seeding in the World Cup is used to make the groups even, if ,for instance, you had Italy Brazil, England and, say, Argentina in one group then

Whoops I posted before I finished so I'll continue but I have been on the lash.... then you had New Zealand, Greece, (after seeing them today I think they are probably going to be the weakest team at the WC) Honduras and Algeria the groups wouldn't be even meaning the best team wouldn't win the tournament, so seeding is the right way to go about things. Anyway RK hasn't said he is looking at players from the top nations so get off his back people. He was probably just asked his opinion on the WC so he obliged with an answer.

"the groups wouldnt be even meaning the best team wouldnt win".........what a load of bullsh-t.....the best team should win the tournament however the groups are picked so why do they have to be sheltered ? money money money
