Keane Closing in on Strike Target
Keane Closing in on Strike Target
Thursday, 5th Aug 2010 16:28

Boss Roy Keane says he is closing in on signing a new striker, although refused to confirm whether that man is Cardiff frontman Michael Chopra. The Town manager is a big fan of Chopra, who played under him at Sunderland, but says there are other hitmen also in his sights.

Keane says he is getting near to adding his fourth signing of the summer: “We’re very, very close, unbelievably close. Just like any other player, there’s negotiations, there are talks going on.

“Obviously, Chops has been mentioned a number of times, but Chops isn’t the only striker on the planet, you have to be aware of that. We’re talking to a few other clubs and I spoke to Dave Jones about other stuff. It’s not always about Michael Chopra, trust me.”

At the weekend, Cardiff manager Dave Jones said Town’s offer for the 26-year-old didn’t yet match the figure the Welsh club still owe Sunderland for the one-time Newcastle trainee.

Keane says no moves in or out of the club are likely before the season’s opening game at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

Being unbelievably close means he'll be here by the New Year. Wonder if Keane will still be here by then.

To be honest, I still can't see it being anyone but Chopra. He stated he wanted a proven championship goalscorer, well? Who's about? Gary Hoopers gone, and now the season starts in 2 days, I cant see teams wanting to sell there prized assets. However, I may be wrong, but what with us struggling to meet Cardiffs demands, and Walters being sold for 3mil, I fully believe Chopra will be a town player before we play Burnley next saturday :)

Keano has to get this signing right so it's worth being patient, does sound like there could be another target at Cardiff from that quote though?
Can't wait for Saturday!

Sometime's it's what is not said that's important, Chopra is looking more and more like a smokescreen. Oh, and what about that right back position? I'm feeling incredibly and increasingly anxious about this season and I really, really don't want to. I've defended Keane in the past, but he's not making it easy for me.

Town 'til I die!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shame something won't be sorted by Saturday - as I can't see any of our other strikers scoring goals! Still, it is encouraging that Roy is talking to a number of clubs and has other striker targets! Maybe he will pull off a double swoop!

Was Chopra in the interview today? Is that what Keanes means by close? I got the interview by the minute but a mate reckons he may have been at Portman Road at the time!
