Keane Confident Town Can Keep Wickham
Keane Confident Town Can Keep Wickham

Town boss Roy Keane says he is confident that the Blues can hold on to star striker Connor Wickham during the January transfer window. Speculation regarding the 17-year-old’s future has continued in recent weeks with Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester United all said to be chasing his signature.

Despite this, Keane believes the Blues will be able to keep hold of their £10 million-rated prize asset when the window opens: “Yes, no problem there.”

The Blues boss says the England U19 international might have done enough to push his way into the Town first team for Saturday’s game at Nottingham Forest: “Connor did well the other night, young Murray did well the other night. We do give players opportunities and it’s up to them to take them. We’ll have a look at it.”

Keane has played down the likelihood of the Blues adding another striker on loan: “I didn’t say we were definitely going to go out and get a striker, what I said was that we’d keep our options open and if that’s an area where we continue to struggle, we’ll have a look at it.

“It’s not just about the strikers, particularly when we’re playing the one up front. We’ve got widemen, we’ve got midfielders. David Norris is doing well for us in terms of his goals, but we’ve got Andros and Carlos and other players who we feel are capable of scoring goals for us. We can't just be dependent on our strikers.”

The Town manager isn’t, however, ruling out the possibility of a further addition to his squad but says the Blues wouldn't be alone in wanting a quality frontman: “We’re always looking. If any half-decent striker becomes available, we won’t be the only club that might be interested in trying to get him. It’s the hardest position on the field to fill."

Meanwhile, Jason Scotland says he's targeting 15 goals this season, having netted four so far in his time with the Blues: "I'm happy enough with that but I could have had more.

"The gaffer has said that he's looking for me to get between 15 and 20 goals this season and I'll be disappointed if I don't achieve that.

"I scored goals at Championship level before with Swansea and I'm here to do the same with Ipswich."

For Gods sake sell him for £8M - £10M, if its to Spurs keep the two loanees as part of the deal and buy a couple of STRIKERS who can put the ball in the net.

You said it yourself the difference in this league is your strikers, we seem to be deficient in this department.

I agree. Take 8-10 mill for connor, pay 1.5 mill for townsend, same for livermore , get chops in for 4 mill and we would still have enough for a RB and creative midfiielder like Pratley.

I have mixed feelings about Wickham. We could get a nice payday selling him now but we run the risk of his price going down the longer we wait. Hopefully, this kid will become a really good player but what if he doesn't make the grade and eventually drift into lower league footy? I think if we get anywhere from 8-10million, I think we would be fools not to take it. Every player has his price.

if the price is right he should and will go, thats how things are.He is a good player,he is also young and has a long way to go,for people to say he will be ''super'' player in a few years is a bit o t t, many things can happen and pressure to be successful or pressure because of success has ruined more than one youngster.

Wickham will go as his boss has effectively given up on auto promotion this season and hopes we will be in mix for lottery of play offs..

thats not a team i would commit myself to..
gone in jan..lets hope he plays well up till then and maximises value

:(

The club should not sell if it genuinely has aspirations of playing in the premiership next season!

Lets hope we can keep him, if not try to arrange a swap deal with Spurs to keep the boys we have on loan from them.

Can't understand some town fans on TWTD.

During pre-season, 90% of comments on rumours of selling wickham were completely for holding onto him.

Then, after CW has had a slow return from an injury and despite him being only 17, 11 games into the season everyone wants to flog him!

I say keep him, it'd be like getting rid of D.Bent all over again, but worse.

Unless CW can learn to trap the ball or head it then we should sell before the big boys sus out his deficiencies.

£10 million would be hard to turn down. Looked good against Watford, lets hope it's given him that extra drive. Wickham to partner Scotland upfront against Forest, COYB!

I have to say I would not be disappointed if we accepted a £10M bid for Conner. Would bank role a promotion push.

You lot are pathetic. Typical I want it now supporters, and I use that term very loosely. I hope Conner doesn't read these pages or he WILL be off. This guy is destined to be awesome but most of you are too ignorant/stupid to realise

Is this a joke? 10 million pounds? I've seen nothing to warrant £1 milliion. Bite their hands off!!!

bluechick : I said destined. Learn to read.

araz : you clearly know nothing about football. Why do you think all these Prem scouts are looking at him?

I hope all you slating a 17 year old because he hasn't scored 20 goals yet, come back on here and apologise for your stupidty when he's a massive star.

Well worth 10 million pounds, loads of nieve bookings and 0 goals playing as striker.............yes, I know he is young but..........really, 10 million quid?..............take it!

whats the point of selling Wickham fo 10 million when Keane will waste it like the 12 million he has spent already.

Adrian_Paz added 13:30 - Oct 25
Agree with Dolly_Verbiage, so many on here seem to want success straight away. I would take a lot more pride from seeing us develop young players like CW into future stars like we have done previously rather than buying second rate players just cos they might get us out of this division for a season. Keep faith with Wickham, remember he is only 17 and get behind him and the team.

I read the threads on here on a regular basis, but very seldom post. The main reason is due a large majority of negative comments about the manager of our football club. I agree that the football has not been great this season, some of the tactics have been wrong and some of his buys have been poor, but for every negative there is also a positive. We are 3 point off the play offs, 1 game away from a qtr final so yes we are in a better position than a year ago. Let's wait and see where we are come January until we start moaning. Let's get behind the team and the manager. Let's do our job as supporters. Big Gaz how you can ever want your team to lose is just pathetic and childish. Ps I am neither anti or pro Keane I am an Ipswich Town. End off !!!
