Keane Disappointed to Be Leaving Town
Keane Disappointed to Be Leaving Town
Friday, 7th Jan 2011 11:50

Former Town boss Roy Keane says he is hugely disappointed to be leaving Portman Road. The Irishman was told that his time with the Blues was at an end yesterday via a phone call from club owner and chairman Marcus Evans.

Keane released a statement via the League Managers’ Association: “I’m hugely disappointed to be leaving Portman Road. Results haven’t been as good as I’d have hoped so far this season and when results aren’t good the manager gets the sack, that’s the game.

“However, I have a genuine belief that we were making progress and that the players have what it takes to turn this season around. We were preparing well for our visit to Chelsea on Sunday and then our Carling Cup semi with Arsenal. Getting to that semi proves what I know the team is capable of.

“I was also working hard to build the squad during the transfer window, looking at our options to attract new players to the club. I have loved my time at Ipswich, living locally to the club with my family, and have a massive respect for the club, its staff, the fans and the community and I wish them well.”

Richard Bevan, chief executive of the LMA added: “Roy is one of the most committed and dedicated managers in the game and without a doubt leaving Ipswich will be very disappointing for him.

“Roy’s departure though, typifies him, in his honest and forthright appraisal of his departure. This season’s run with the club in the Carling Cup is testament to his ability in getting the best out of his team in big games and it is disappointing that he has not been given the opportunity to lead out Ipswich in their first cup semi-final for thirty-odd years [sic].”

Genuinely believe he did his best and a great shame it didn't work out. Have always admired his honesty, but another example that great players don't always make great managers

LMA guy needed tio check his facts we were in LC semi ten seasons ago.

Little progress since then sadly except consolidation under Royle who is the type of manager we now need.

I appreciated Roy's candour, and he did bring some good things to the club. There have been no serios problems with discipline, the team has a backbone and a toughness and work ethic that was not there with some of the previous managers over recent years, he has kept players feet on the gound sucha s Wickham, and he did win more games than he lost (though not enough for an ambitious club). I certainly wish him well in the future.

Good luck for the future. I'd like to see Keane manage Norwich if Lambert ever went.

"their first cup semi-final for thirty-odd years " LMA bloke seems as clueless as Keane!

I have no respect for Keane and to be honest I don't wish him well. He has destroyed the traditions of this club by getting rid of the likes of Klug etc and after not winning a game in 14 (club record) and losing 6 in a row he even has the arrogance to suggest the fans "don't know anything about football" It will take years to clear up his mess.

Good riddance.

Am disappointed it didn't work out for RK here. I know he's absolutely loaded, but he's moved his whole family here, and that alone shows how committed he was. Thye bloke has lost his job which isn't nice, lets hope some of the hate mob on here show some compassion rather than gloating - it simply wasn't meant to be. I do feel that at the right club at the right time, he could turn out to be a very good manager. Just a shame in my opinion that it won't be with us.

I supported Roy untill recently and wish him best of luck in the future. It did seem from some of the comments he made that the board we unable/unwilling to bring in the players he identified.
But thanks for giving it your best Roy, you're a winner by nature so it must have been hurting to see the run we'd been on since November, especially after the start to the season, when we all thought it looks like it's finally come good and last seasons rot was over. It wasn't to be.

at least he was dignified in his interview afterwards.I hope upon hope that the speculation about Megson coming in proves false .

I am sorry it did not work out for Keane and wish him the best. Although I would have taken the McCarthy side in the great Siapan row I genuinely hoped he would be a success at town. I was prepared to give him the benefit of doubt last season it takes time to rebuild a side etc - although I wondered was a side that was only a few points off the playoffs in need of radical overhaul. This season despite a good start it was difficult to see what progress had been achieved.

Not_so_Keane - if you think that Keane is to blame for all that's wrong with this club at the moment, then you've kind of proved him right - you don't know anything about football. Yes, he's made errors, but a lot of the problems with this club are still here today now that he's gone, and weren't of his making in the first place.

Bluroo he was rubbish, how anyone can say different is beyond me. Everyone wanted him to succeed and i think he had more than a fair chance and i cant question his efforts. Simply a poor football manager/tactition and we was going in the wrong direction with him in charge!

The biggest game in the run to the Carling Cup semis was vs West Brom reserves. Clutching at straws.

Was still star struck with Keanes appointment and am gutted he didnt become a legend at Town! Still, he will find his feet and I am sure he will be a premiership manager again one day.

I'm positive RK tried his best, but along with other great players such as Bobby Moore, Maradona, and Bobby Charlton he's maybe just nor cut out for management. A world class player does not often make a world class manager.

A year too late in my opinion. Keane must be the only one who is disappointed at leaving Ipswich. His tenure had been disastrous but hopefully, the sun will peek though the clouds now and we can salvage what is left of this season.

im sure roy did all he could possible to turn things around but it just didnt work out i still feel both the owner and chief exec clegg have a lot to answer for it really dosent look great when both your owner and chief exec have no background knowledge of the game and also no passion for this such great club so both evans and clegg need to wake up and sort this mess out aand get more involved of the day to day running just leaves to say that keano your and will allways be a legend

PartyDaz.

How many chairmen in this league give their managers £8m to spend??? How come Magilton managed an 8th finish under Clegg/Evans? Don't be so naive and lap up Keane's mind games. It's never his fault remember.

Good to see the owner and chief executive are consistant - second manager sacked by phone, this may be the way you treat your company employees Evans but its not the way the club I have supported since 1965 does things.

Hugely disappointed and saddened by Roy's departure. I would've taken a mid table finish and Carling Cup semi at the start of the season, which is what Roy would've achieved this season.

I may have dreamt of play-offs and the Premiership within two years, but I never expected it. My biggest hope though was that in the greatest of ITFC traditions we would give Roy time, but most of all our support.

For those of you who think giving a manager less than two years is enough time, you are fickle sheep of the modern era. And support? My God, that's the least Roy deserved. But no, typically the majority of fans berated him instead of getting behind him and the board lost faith because they didn't get their money back. Well, that's the risk you take when you buy a football club, Evans. So, what are you going to do now? Spend more money on a new guy and new signings. Of course you will, you have no choice. It's short sighted, and it's a joke.

Well I for one didn't lose faith. And by the sounds of things nor did the man himself.
