Cotterill Expects Further Norris Talks Later This Week
Cotterill Expects Further Norris Talks Later This Week
Tuesday, 25th Jan 2011 09:48

Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill says he expects to continue talks aimed at taking Town skipper David Norris to Fratton Park later this week. The Blues are understood to have turned down a £250,000 offer for the midfielder but the Pompey manager claims the 29-year-old, who is out of contract at the end of June, is likely to join his club in the summer if the move doesn't take place this month.

Cotterill said: “Maybe talks will resume towards the mid-to-latter part of this week. I am led to believe that might happen. I have spoken to his agent in the past couple of weeks.

“As it stands at this moment in time, maybe there is a deal to be done, maybe not. If not, I am pretty sure he will be coming to us in the summer. But he is happy to come.”

The Portsmouth boss continues to insist that news of Pompey’s interest in Norris wasn’t made public by his club: “The story didn't come out from us because it would have been of no benefit to us. We are slightly disappointed about that as we felt we have done everything through the right channels. But I spoke to Roy Keane about this so it shows how long it's gone on.”

Yesterday, Blues boss Paul Jewell said he was similarly "disappointed" that Cotterill was talking publicly about his move for Norris.

Jewell also said his captain hadn’t told him that he wants to move to Portsmouth and revealed that he plans to hold talks with both Norris and Gareth McAuley, whose deal is also up at the end of the season, later this week.

brotherblue1974 not sure you'd place your future career on one game albeit a potential cup final? Cotterill just shut up, i really really hope Norris signs for us and it will be massive egg on your face.

If he doesn't want to stay beyond this season I don't want him in the club now, we need players committed to our cause so either sign up or ship out.

Propoganda aimed at unsettling him and putting pressure on Ipswich to come up with a better deal - all driven by his agent not him.

If he didn't want to be here he wouldn't be playing his heart out and scoring goals - there would be no need as he would know he was going anyway. And to be honest - a few weeks ago he probably did want to leave! Who wouldn't have? But things have changed and he knows it.

I suggest we all stay as calm as PJ on this and don't swallow the propoganda.

i agree with you on that one if we get to the final they will both most probably come out and say or do something regarding there future`s.
Remember a couple of seasons ago when we were close to signing david nugent and he stayed at pompey because they got to a cup final and he stayed there.

legoman oh yes the bigger the better!!! I agree smart Coterill talks of speaking to 'agents' there is absolutely no talk of him actually speaking to Norris. Its those greedy agents that will destroy football (if they havent already). Norris interviewed on Radio Suffolk before Christmas said he loved the club, he wanted to stay and was leaving it to his Agent to sort out..... cant see how thing can change so dramatically....

Smithy, well said! If cotterall says he had spoke to keane about it that doesn't surprise me at all ! Why on earth would Norris want to play at that dump is beyond me, surely we've got more to offer than a shambles of a club like pompey!
But at the end of the day if he wants out best he goes this week see no point keeping him here it could have a unsettling effect on others. C.O.Y.B.

"We are slightly disappointed about that as we felt we have done everything through the right channels"

So why are you STILL openly talking to the press about it then Steve?

If he doesn't want to be here we should move him on now and at least get a fee for him. Realistically we wont go down and have enough quality without Norris to finish mid table. This season is over if we lose tonight. Might aswell get a big earner off the wage bill and get £250k in the bank. Would like to see him go somewhere other than Pompey though, that would be funny.

Same applies for MacAuley. I rate them both but we need players who want to commit. If we can cash in now and get £500k for Macauley I would do it. We have a strong enough team without them to do ok this season. Fulop, O'Dea, Delaney, Smith, Peters, Leadbitter, Edwards, Hyam, Civelli, Martin, Scotland, Priskin, Wickham. not to mention Brown, O'Connor, Healy etc.

If we we're in the top half i would be tempted to keep them but there is no point, we will be starting next season in the Championship regardless. Best part of £30,000 per week and £700,000 worth of assets there that will leave for nothing in 5 months.

Ship them out, no player is bigger than this Football Club.

This is posturing by Norris or his agent, along the lines of "Portsmouth have offered me this. If you want me to stay at Ipswich, you need to better it". Don't like it, but it is understandable as he wants to get himself the best deal possible. All footballers are greedy mercenaries, that's life.

I hope the talks PJ has planned with both of them are based on 'here's a contract, sign it by 5pm Friday if you want to stay, if not you'll be sold to the highest bidder by Monday'
Getting sick of agents using the media to pitch football players against their clubs for personal financial gain.

Cotterill should show some class and keep his thoughts to himself.

Agree with Smart4. This is all about agents who arent regulated and dont care about us or any club just as long as they get their fees. Hopefully Chuck will sign for us but if not then at least PJ is thinking of finding a replacement.
