Jewell Disappointed St Ledger Move Made Public
Jewell Disappointed St Ledger Move Made Public
Tuesday, 1st Feb 2011 08:10

Boss Paul Jewell says he’s disappointed that details of Town’s attempt to sign Preston’s Sean St Ledger were made public. The Blues were first linked with a £2.5 million move for the Irish international defender last week with Preston chairman Maurice Lindsay confirming that his club had turned down Town’s offer yesterday.

Jewell said: “I’m a bit disappointed with that. It’s great for you guys [the press] but it’s no good for us.

“I know the owner spoke to Maurice Lindsay, I spoke to Phil Brown first and then it went to owner level, and they quoted us a fee.”

The Town boss says he knows Lindsay, who was chairman of Wigan Warriors rugby league club during Jewell’s time as manager of Wigan Athletic, and spoke to him about St Ledger prior to taking over at Portman Road.

The Blues manager said: “Maurice, who I know really well, must think I’ve got a short memory because I was speaking to him about six weeks ago and he was talking about Sean St Ledger and told me what price he’d be really happy with, and it’s gone up £1 million! He must think I’ve got a touch of Alzheimer’s or something!”

Town could still move for St Ledger or any other Football League player on a short-term basis, perhaps with a view to a permanent move, when the 'emergency' loan window opens next week.

Just because Jewell was chatting to a guy he knew doesn't mean he was on his way here. It may just be Jewell is very prudent

prudent? he was out of a job for 2 years, so why would he be asking about a player then if he wasn't sure he had a job coming up ?

Course PJ knew he had the job - just like RK was in place well before Magic got the boot... and reading this article explains to me why ME and SC didn't seem to, erm, get round to resigning loads of our players this year - they didn't want to hand their 2nd managerial appointment a squad full of players he maybe didn't want or need.

I think Jewell has done alot of player scouting while he was not officialy working and had enquiries made on players to help him quickly build a squad at a new club.
Its great preparation to be honest on his behalf and shows he really means business. Summer should be interesting!

Anyone notice how many contacts PJ seem to have, as a likeable, cheerful and open bloke?

That was Keano's down fall, isolating himself, upsetting managers, being aloof and being aggressive and withdrawn. He, in his own words, claim he is always willing to learn, well, I hope he does as you never know when you may need help. I can't imagine him having his face on a football stand in years to come.

I think I sound more like a psychiatrist than a football fan!

Well said bluelady.

bluepeter - tend to agree. I think Keane's presence was off-putting for some players whi might otherwise have considered coming to Town.

Let's hope his contacts translate into some great deals.

Yet again, more good points about PJ raise to the surface. Fingers crossed he can get it right on the pitch too.

Jewell's put his foot in it! Obvious the deal was done with Jewell BEFORE Roy was sacked. Moredeceit from ITFC. Don't get me wrong, I'm not moaning - just saying the club should sometimes be more honest! Why lie about the circumstances of Jewell's appointment?

Anyway, forget St. Ledger - if Jewell has had so much time to prepare, where was plan b, c or d for a striker? Right-back?
