Wickham Again Linked With Liverpool
Wickham Again Linked With Liverpool
Friday, 3rd Jun 2011 10:20

Liverpool are reported to have renewed their interest in Town striker Connor Wickham. The Reds have long been linked with the 18-year-old with their director of football strategy Damien Comolli at the Hull City match in February.

According to the report, which largely appears to be a rehash of earlier stories, the Blues have put a £10 million price-tag on Wickham’s head, although there is understood to be a clause in Wickham’s deal which would allow him to discuss a move if the Blues receive a bid at a set level, believed to be somewhere around £10 million to £15 million mark.

Wickham, whose valuation is said to have almost been met by Spurs a year ago, recently extended his contract by a further year until 2014, not 2013 as the story claims.

Liverpool, Spurs and the rest of the Premier League’s bigger clubs are certain to be keeping an eye on Wickham at the UEFA European U21 Championship in Denmark later this month.

After facing Norway in a warm-up game at Southampton on Sunday (ESPN/ESPN HD 2.30pm), Stuart Pearce’s side will take on Spain on June 12th, Ukraine on June 15th and the Czech Republic on June 19th in the group stages.

Let him join the exodus. Perhaps we can join a five-a-side league instead

Would only sit on the bench with Carroll and Suarez there. Imo would be totally pointless for the kid.

Not really pointless for Connor to move. He will be getting much more money there than staying here and he will be training with some of the best players in the Premiership.

The way it is looking. I believe we will have to sell him before ME releases any money for PJ to strengthen the squad. I don't want to see him go, but if this is the case, the sooner the better for us.

Agree with you totally Bergholtblue,
It must be disconcerting for Wickham seeing the players leave who have left (McCauley-our best defender, Norris-our top-goalscoring midfielder who was named MOM more than any other by our fans, Brown-up and coming talent, Eastman-Solid Central Defender (Awful right-back mind)). Wickham must be looking around and thinking (like us) "Where is the ambition in this club???". At least at Liverpool he will get recognition and get a few good games (mainly off the bench I fear)- but must be better than what he will get with us at the moment...
Would give some much needed cash injection into the club also. Hope we don't blow it on "homegrown talent" (overpriced) but hope we continue to look at Belgium, France, Portugal and bring in some talented players for cheap from there. When you look at the 5th/6th placed teams in Portugal-their players are getting much less than our "stars"- and I'm sure these guys could compete (look at what Braga did this season...). Funnily enough-this time last year I said we should go on a shopping spree for Braga players.....

Such pessimists on this site.

People get stale in jobs after a few years and most players degenerate at the same club unless they have genuine affection for it.

Let's have some players that actually want to play for our once great and hopefully soon to be great again football club.

They ARE out there and Paul WILL find them.

Be patient and keep the faith.

for the first time in a long time paul jewell seems to be in the driving seat on this particular transfer issue.if connor keeps playing and progressing as he is its going to create a bidding war.i think we could see a record transfer for a championship player to premier league.my only hope is that when that time comes connor has already put us in the premiership.after we get all that loveley lolly we can then go and get the players we need to take us forward.so come on then spurs and liverpool, either put up or shutup!

If I were Connor or indeed one of his advisors, I would be monitoring the incoming transfer activity at PR very carefully. Town's ability (or inability) to sign players SOON may determine what happens to Wickham. If I were him, I'd be looking at:

- Club captain and leading scorer already left the club (on free)
- Most consistent and only decent defender already left the club (on a free)
- Clubs only decent play maker (and fans player of the year) returning to Hull after loan - VERY unlikely to return.
- Whether a very negative 4-5-1 is really the system I would like to play in (as a striker)
- Whether, as a striker, I would want to be playing in a totally ineffective wide-left role.

I am sorry to those who disagree, but all of these questions must have an impact on whether Wickham will WANT to stay with us. At the moment the club's ambition and future plans will be paramount to his decision.

i think Conner will stay,he is a sensible lad who knows he is just going to be a bench warmer at a bigger club if he were to leave,he just needs a decent strike partner to feed off here!as for the senior players who have left-i know someone who knows someone?(recent ex player)says they left because of a certain C.E.at this club, not very much liked!!...

jas0999,why do u come on here? dont think ive ever seen u put a positive post on here. you clearly not a big fan or ud know that pj has said several times that he intends 2 play 4-4-2. the only reason he played 4-5-1 this season gone was he hadnt the players good enough to play 4-4-2. this is what he intends to address in close seaon by signing the players enabling us to play that way, therefore wickham will be 1 of a front 2. so do your research properly before writing incorrect assumptions. either that or keep your negativity 4 yourself. that goes for all the other total pessimists too. if you cant get behind the club then go support someone else. we dont need that kind of support.

if we let this lad go there will be every shirt worn by the town since 1976 and a season ticket going for free if anyone's interested.

Blind devotion is also pointless, people mustnt be afraid to tell the truth even if it means saying something negative,we ll end up having more tosh on here than in the house of commons.Id sooner hear someone say "Wickham is nowhere near ready for the premiership" than "we re gonna win the champions lge within 2yrs". Unfortunately the pessimists/realists have predicted much more correctly than the optimists over the past 2-3 seasons, its not that they want to,its simply that they have far greater perception of the current situation and it certainly doesnt mean they are any less a supporter.
