Reserves Draw at Needham
Reserves Draw at Needham

Tamás Priskin netted a 53rd minute equaliser as a Town XI drew 1-1 at Needham Market on Wednesday evening. Former Blues academy defender Ollie Fenn had put the Ryman League Division One North side ahead on 26.

As expected, Town fielded a number of players with first-team experience, including left-back Shane O'Connor, who recently played in two trial matches for Crawley, who are weighing up whether to sign the Irishman.

Town made the better start and Tamás Priskin broke through on the right but his effort was pushed round the post by former Blues academy keeper Andrew Plummer.

Skipper Colin Healy came close to opening the scoring on 13 when his quickly taken freekick fell just wide of Plummer's post.

The home side, who also included ex-Town man Gavin Johnson, took a surprise lead on 26 when another former Blue, defender or midfielder Ollie Fenn, dispossessed Luke Hyam and hit a low shot from 25 yards that beat Arran Lee-Barrett in the Town goal.

Town almost responded four minutes later when Jaime Peters's right-wing cross was just glanced away from the head of Priskin by Pip Boyland.

O'Connor then sliced wide before Town started creating some better chances towards the end of the first-half. A good move started with Ronan Murray playing a ball out wide to Peters, who in turn found O'Connor who saw his left-foot effort turned just over the bar.

Priskin lashed over before the half-time whistle and whilst Town made no subs at the interval, first-team manager Paul Jewell joining first-team coach Sean McCarthy and U18s coach Russell Osman in the dugout for the second half.

Despite having a few half-chances in the first period, Town were certainly not firing on all cylinders but took just eight minutes of the second half before they did get an equaliser.

A determined run and cross from Peters on the right resulted in Boyland slicing his clearance straight to Priskin, who fired into the bottom corner from 12 yards.

The hosts very nearly regained the lead on 62 when a long crossfield ball from Rhys Barber found the on-rushing Deakan Napier, who saw his lobbed effort over the advancing Lee-Barrett bounce just over the bar to the despair of the home support.

Sub James Evans saw his dangerous freekick from the left turned behind by Joe Whight and from the resultant corner, Lee-Barrett produced a magnificent block to deny Danny Bloomfield in the six-yard box.

Two minutes later and Town should have been the side to take the lead when Peters's cross found an unmarked Ronan Murray, but the Republic of Ireland U21 international headed over when he really should have hit the target.

Jamie Griffiths nearly gave Town the lead with an audacious effort from 40 yards that had Plummer back-tracking to tip the ball over his bar for a corner. The final whistle sounded soon after, with the game ending in a 1-1 draw.

Colin Healy stood out in the Town midfield and Jaime Peters put a good shift in on the right wing. Priskin conceded numerous fouls and became seemingly frustrated at how his evening was going, although the Hungarian did take his goal well.

Town XI: Lee-Barrett, Jones, O’Connor, Healy, Whight, Ainsley, Peters, Hyam, Priskin, Murray, Griffiths (Tiofack 82). Unused: Scotcher, O’Donnell, Maduako. Att: 553.

I am most def not a moaner and groaner on this site but anyone a tad concerned that we're not smashing goals past teams in significantly lower tiers if the footy pyramid?
8 of our starting 11 (and I exclude Jones, O'Connor and Griffiths) will all be very disappointed not to be pushing to be involved with our first team squad on a regular basis!
COYB!

Gavin Johnson.. Surely he's about 60 by now..?!?!?!
Would love to see a picture of him now, taking into account his hair loss at about 20!

Colin Healy looked good as did the two centre backs for most of the match (Joe Whight played CB incidentally), the rest were pretty ordinary, keeper looked shaky, full-backs solid enough but poor going forward. Priskin reminded me of Balotelli, yes he scored but was awful, complaining about decision, poor. IMO he's got to go, didn't represent Town at all well.

Jewell, McCall, Wark, McCarthy, Osman, Hutchings & Clegg were all there. Jewell stopped for photos and took the banter well when Needham scored.
