All this nonsense needs to end now
at 09:09 20 May 2024

By the same token, they’re not going to outbid us either. I doubt money is a factor.

It purely comes down to where McKenna feels his career can progress the best in addition to his own domestic situation - where he wants to live, kids education, domestic happiness etc. another factor is how truly he’s invested in what’s happening here. Only he can answer that.

The nonsense will continue now. Price of success I suppose. Ashton is right - ignore the noise.

Hypothetical.....
at 08:40 20 May 2024

Absolutely not.

It isn’t about market value. It’s about what these people offer to the football club. In McKenna’s case that’s considerably more than any individual player.

There’s far too much focus on ££. But that’s the way of the world, sadly.

So is Kieran at something of a crossroads!
at 07:51 20 May 2024

I disagree with this, to a certain extent.

KM has been outstanding. Everything he’s done from the day he walked through the door has been first class. He’s a brilliant manager and deserves all the accolades he is getting.

However, he couldn’t have done it without the people behind the scenes. The owners, structure, CEO, Chairman, culture, standards, ambition were there or being put in and he embraced it all. Even the core of the team was there. He developed it, improved, added to it and has developed that astonishing way of playing that devastated L1 and the Championship.

The relationship and trust at the top of the club looks so strong. The way the club operates suits McKenna in a way it never could have with Cook - and visa versa. A perfect fit. Could KM have succeeded under Evans? Of course not but then he is far too sensible to have gone anywhere near Evans’ corrosive ownership.

When he moves on, it’s going to have to be to a club that allows him to operate without interference in the way he does here. He’s seen what a fractured large club looks like in Man Utd, so my guess he will be careful when he goes and very demanding on whoever he works for next.

Looking at the rumour mill, most of which is rubbish, the choice will of course be his.

Any excuse to play one of the greatest guitarists ever.

Listen and enjoy. You’ll thank me for it.

Ok, it’s before football was invented in 1992 with the Dark Lord Sky, but in 1963/4 Ipswich conceded 121 goals in a 42 game season. Is that a record?

Twice I've given up my season ticket.
at 17:35 19 May 2024

Not at all. I’m afraid that’s how it rolls. I’ve missed one home game back to god knows when. Yep, the 5-0 drubbing. Grrrr.

I only bought a season ticket in March 2003 because circumstances allowed it. Pure luck, no more no less.

Edit: I had a ST 1992-97 then 2000-2018. Work and lack of money ended the first stint. My dad’s health struggles and McCarthy’s depressing football the second. He was an ST holder from when he returned to Suffolk to 2018.

The spine of the team
at 12:42 19 May 2024

I think you make a very good point CB. I suspect the ambition of the owners is greater than many people have realised. This is no Evans style ‘quick flip’. Evidence? The way they’ve gone about it and what they’ve put in place.

This club is structured now. Now more total reliance on a man with a coffee cup, dirty t shirt and a tendency to blow his top. There are defined departments for all elements with expertise and all pulling in the same direction. Got right, this is a very powerful thing.

I noticed when Ashton was asked about recruitment within the club he was quick to point out that while media will need beefing up, recruitment everywhere else is largely in place. In other words, they’ve largely geared for the Premier League.

We are no longer a shrinking club; a byword for mediocrity with a faded badge. Who knows what’ll happen/what the future holds, but I don’t get the impression the owners are ‘going to slacken off now’. It’s very exciting.

I guess Norwich want to do manager interviews at a secret location to avoid world media spotlight. Chantry Grill should do it.

Good fit for them, I reckon. Gets on with Delia too. Likes her sponge cake.

I think your average Ox is going to vote against that idea. Not a lot in it for them.

In any case, lovely colour for Suffolk houses, abysmal for football shirts.

Bring back the cream and black stripes number!

The figures vary depending on which site you look at. I suspect one or two steal information off the other and for some, lazy guesswork to get something out into the ether. There is also the effect of the January window. Do these stats take account of that? Doubtful.

What is clear is two things. Ipswich are coming in mid table for player wages whether 16th as some of these sites think or higher. The other interesting pattern is the gap between the parachute clubs and the rest. It makes the scale of our club’s achievement all the greater and in away how to structure salaries for next year all the more difficult. A nice problem.

Back to McKenna, whether you believe Brighton to be the new Real Madrid presenting McKenna with an opportunity of a lifetime or a mid sized club doing exceptionally well, he also has a nice problem.

Does he continue in an environment where he has good working relationships, a good lifestyle and potential to grow as a manager or does he move on? Will a better opportunity present itself and is the timing for him right? He’s a thoughtful man and seems very controlled. I suspect he will know when he wants to move on and what opportunity he will take. I doubt it’ll be Brighton, lovely though that part of the world is.

Regardless, nobody has control but him. The world is his lobster, so for me there’s little point in worrying about it even if it’s fun speculating.

There is also the factor that 85% of what’s written is rubbish. Anyone who’s worked on anything where the media has interest will tell you that. Ashton is right in saying don’t believe all you read.

Maybe that’s why Count Binface is keen to repurpose Birmingham as a Star Base. Makes sense to me!

Oh I’m sure you are right. What the sources of this stuff are, I’ve no idea.

The question is have they cut their cloth to non-parachute running costs already? The way they played at Leeds certainly suggests they have done that.

On a serious note I’m sure somebody far more interested in the affairs of Norwich will have looked into their ‘proper’ accounts and will know where they stand. But in the meantime the Pinkun brigade seem a little worried. Another speculative list:

Brighton sideways move?
at 23:18 18 May 2024

It depends on your definition of bigger. Given who is investing, Wrexham are a much bigger club. Are we planning a 55k new stadium? Nope. Leeds, Sunderland. Bigger clubs - look at their attendances and potential? Would KM run off to there?

It all depends on the measure. This bigging up of Brighton I find a bit odd tbh. Well run, done tremendously but whatever they do they won’t break into the elite clubs any more than Bournfuff, Brentford or Flum will. They’re top of the pile for mid size clubs, along with West Ham and Palace - who McKenna wasn’t interested in.

I guess it’s about potential and whether KM is interested in that. If McKenna decides maintenance man at mid table BHA provides the fastest route to his dream job, off he will go. So be it. But I suspect and hope he’s a bit smarter than that.

Now if Chelsea go after him, he’d be insane not to take it.

We will see.

Romulan North End are after a new manager. Reckon McKenna is light years ahead of the rest, including that up and coming Klingon Stagruk Urk.

His salary is a bargain £30k pw for the Premier League quality, speedy, talented player he is.

Their annual salary bill is £29,806,000. Can’t see a problem.

Leicester, Leeds and Southampton were cemented in the Premier League. All the tools and much more were there for them too. All three arguably bigger than Brighton. Certainly the first two. It counts for little.

Squad values? So where was our squad value in the Championship? 16th? Or was that the wage bill?

If we were still in the Championship, I could see the attraction, but are not. We are currently garnering more interest and profile than Brighton. Would he benefit from keeping the pedals turning at Brighton? Doubt it. Will he get them in the Champions League? No chance. We are talking about Brighton, rivals of Crystal Palace, not a Villa sized club.

So if McKenna does that it’s nothing special is it? Others have done it. So he’s just the maintenance man - if he’s lucky. If he does it with Ipswich, is it or is it not a bigger achievement given we were in the middle of L1 when he arrived?

Which is the greater challenge?
