[Blog] Our Fans' Attitude to the Team and the Manager
Written by Sindre94 on Thursday, 9th Dec 2010 21:59

This is my first blog, and it's about our fans' attitude.

I'm really worried about the attitude that some of our fans show so far in the season...

1: Connor Wickham is the most promising youngster this club has seen since Darren Bent, and lots of you just can't even give the lad a proper chance until you scream: what an overrated player, etc. He has started something like three games for us, 1 of them he got subbed off after 29 mins.

He has talent, and plenty of it. AND, when Priskin got subbed for him against Barnsley I think it was, some of our fans booed. I'm sure they didn't mean it against Connor, but how do you think it is for 17/18-year-old lad to come on in a match and hear booing by his own fans?

Confidence is more important than many of you think, I know from playing football myself that support from those around is vital to having a good match. Connor has struggled with lots of injuries and I'm sure he will show us what he is capable of doing during this season. 2: The fact that Rory Fallon doesnt get ONE chance by some of our fans, lots of people didnt even find him good enough before he even had played one second for us. What is that really?

3: Tom Eastman. He hasnt played THAT well, but please, support him, he doesn't get better by getting booed.

4: Butchering Keane. I'm not sure if he is the right man for the job, but as long as he is the man in charge. I get behind the team and try and give Keano all the support he needs as long as he has this job.

I quote what The Ballistics said in one of their songs "Follow the Town, up or down" Do not comment, "you are norwegian and you don't know anything!". I'm pretty confident that I have an attitude that's positive towards this club. I wouldn't call myself the best fan, because I don't get to England more often than once a year, but I do know football, and I know for sure that many of our great Town fans do as well.

It's just I'm sick of reading all these negative posts towards the youngsters that we have in this club, how will they develop if we dont give them a proper chance?

I read in the Green Un that the journalist there was also sharing my opinion on the fact that some of our fans have been "less good" this year.

For all of you that KNOW for sure that you are one of those who are guilty of all these categories, you should really be a shamed of yourselve, it's sad how some of our fans are at the moment.

But, for all of you that support the team, the players, the staff and the manager even when we are doing bad, great work, and keep it up.

Cheers from Sindre (16-year-old Norwegian lad).

This forum gets very bogged down with negativity, I agree. I think it serves as a place for a lot of people to vent their anger, which is fine, but to be honest the mood is rarely as negative in reality as it is over this forum. I feel a bit sorry for you if this is the only place you hear other opinions about Ipswich because it must be quite depressing reading some of the sh*t that gets posted on here.

Basically what i'm saying is don't let this board make you think ALL Ipswich support is this negative, because - in my experiences at least - it is not.

As for people challenging whether you're a 'real fan' - the fact you live in Norway and still support Ipswich speaks for itself! It's hard enough to stop people in Ipswich itself from following bigger teams let alone people overseas! Much respect to you for sticking with Ipswich and hope you get a chance to come to Portman Rd again soon.

Cheers.

Don't you hate glory hunters? Only joking, Sindre - great blog piece. As BlueinBrum says... good on you for following Town, and don't take TWTD as a true indication of fans' feelings.

That said, things aren't great and sometimes you can't just sit back and give endless encouragement. Sure, booing players is not on and we all do genuinely want to get behind the team, but when the football being played is poor, when the club continue to disengage with supporters, when the manager doesn't ingratiate himself with the supporters then there's a chance we're not going to be happy.

I think the negativity comes from frustrations that we feel about the club's lack of progress in recent years. We've seen a host of 'smaller' clubs not only catch us up but in some cases go past us (eg Stoke, Hull, Swansea, Bristol, Cardiff, Burnley, Wigan... ). Add poor quality football to the mix and you can understand, well I can anyway, supporters getting on edge. Of course in the clear light of day it's easy to say it doesn't help but when you've paid your money and are sitting there not being entertained, seeing your team throw away points or lose another game it's really not easy to clap your hands and say 'come on lads, heads up.'

Whilst I agree with your sentiment I think I have the right to show my unhappiness if I want to, without being a boo-boy. But perhaps I'm just a grumpy old b@stard... !

I have no problem with this blog and agree about booing the players etc (especially youngsters played out of position like Eastman) but the fact that you admit you haven't actually seen us play that often leads me to understand why you can be so positive.

Basically the football on offer is dire in the extreme and we are not even getting results to justify the negative approach being taken.

However, I too will never boo and will show support when at the games.

But when I'm on here I'll vent my spleen about the 'football' on offer.

But what you shouldn't mistake this for is a lack of support. I support Ipswich Town, and if I don't think our manager is doing right by my club then I'll say so.

You worry too much Squire. The vast majority of the vocal people who post on TWTD hardly ever attend games (Toilet Bloo.......one game in 5 years. He freely admits it. Fletch/Bulbeck.......no games in 3 years). The opinions on here in no way reflect the feelings of people who attend games (and never has).

Firstly if you had been at the Barnsley game you would know the booing which i dont agree with was completely aimed at Keane and nothing to do with Wickham at all . And if you are talking about trying to build confidence of youngsters taking them off 20 minutes into a game is not a good way to go about it and a lot worse than a few comments on a board like this .
Not giving Fallon a chance is poor but we need a big boost signing because we are in a massive slump and to sign someone who is not playing at a lower standard when we have let Stead,Walters,Rhodes,Lee,Lisbie,Counago,Haynes,Clarke go seems ridiculous ?
For Tom Eastman he is bearing the brunt of his managers stubborness for playing him out of position where he has looked totally in adequate, whilst supporters have been saying we have had no right back all season .
And as for butchering Keane are you serious the man has had longer than any other manager would have had at any other club with his return of results and money spent as he says himself ,and it is only after 20 months that he has now lost the fans and whatever the deluded Dalai Farmer says above there are a large number of supporters who do go to all the games whose opinions on this site are
reflected in the negativity because dwindling crowds and booing at games are not signs of happiness at Portman Road however many people wnat to stay in happy land believeing everything is rosy.
I still really hope Keane succeeds but fear he may not have a road back now

I am getting tired of seeing this patronising crap about getting behind the team etc. etc. and people criticising supporters who don't come to football matches every week. Stop it, just stop it.
Going to watch football matches is extremely expensive! I go as often as I can with my wife and my two daughters. We have all had season tickets for 12 years (and I for 25 years), and despite being exasperated by Jim Magilton's last season in charge, we decided to renew our season tickets (which was not at all cheap) when Keane took over, because we expected to be entertained.
We go to football matches to be entertained, because after all, that's what football is about above all else. Last season we were seldom entertained, and so decided this season that we wouldn't renew our tickets and would go only to weekend matches because last season I'd had enough of rushing from work on a tuesday night to stand outside and be cold, finally arriving home at 11 o'clock cold and miserable.
I think that, as supporters, we invest a lot of time and money into the club, and that we do have a right to complain. This booing of young players is neither frequent at Portman Road, nor unique to Portman Road. It's just another stick for the patronising idiots to beat us normal supporters with.
The country is in an economic crisis, football tickets are very expensive, the quality of football has been atrocious for several years now, and it really doesn't look like it will change in the near future. Why should I go to a Cup match on a cold Tuesday night? Why should I keep giving my hard-earned cash over to a company (sorry club) that gives nothing back? Tell me!
There are concerts on every night in Ipswich, but I don't go to most because I think the music is crap, I only go to see films that are entertaining for me. Why should Ipswich Town Football Club be able to assume that I will come, just to be bored? After all, they are an entertainment industry too.
