[Blog] The Old Town Left Us, While The New Town Spirals Into An Abyss Of Darkness
Written by davekl12 on Saturday, 7th Jan 2012 19:52

It's ambiguous to comprehend the harsh magnitude of the situation; a set of players preying off the club's finances while they usher into their antiquated years as a pro (exceptions of course). The harsh reality of the situation leaves a repulsive taste in my mouth fine tuned with non-existent optimism. The question is where do we go from here?

Having read around various Ipswich Town forums it seems the supporters opinions are somewhat scattered. We've had the more youthful supporters demanding instant success, in contrast to the Ipswich loyalists keeping suitable faith in Jewell while he supposedly "team builds", with an ultimate view to reaping the benefits in the coming seasons.

Now I quite simply have to question this philosophy of "team building", purchasing experienced players on their final legs, opting to leave contract negotiations to the last minute, playing four centre midfielders across a four-man midfield. Quite frankly, what's going on? This isn't an act of team building, it's an act of blind optimism in attempting to filter us into the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Isn't a too dissimilar philosophy from the goings on up at the blue side of Manchester, where instant success in abundance with trophies is the biggest hit. In hindsight, this is Ipswich Town FC! Where do our foundations and traditions lie? Not with the petty spending of Manchester City, but the prospect of exciting young players with an unquestionable desire to succeed.

I hate to break it to you, but look at our noisy neighbours. I have no other option but to commend the job Paul Lambert has carried out, what's been achieved has been spectacular on all accounts. We can replicate that! But with a completely different buying and spending philosophy to what we currently operate with.

Since Marcus Evans took over, this club has been plunging backwards to the depths of unforgiving inconsistency, whenever seeming consistency beckons, it's completely thrown out the window in a dismal display. It's becoming impossible for me to be disappointed with losing matches, it's become a relentless case of "Not bad, we only lost by a couple of goals". This just illustrates the fundamental dilemmas that are present right now.

I can't fault Evans and Jewell's ambition, but I most certainly can fault Jewell's contradictory statements which rarely pose any significant relevance. It would be easy for me to say let's scrap everything, a new owner, new chief executive, a new manager. But I will not stand by this, Jewell's past has shown enough of a sparkle despite his mishaps here. He's shown he has an eye for a youngster, arguably our best player this season Aaron Cresswell, we've continued to be linked with the odd Blue Square Premier youngster, for me this is a very good sign.

Regardless of whether we play Championship or League One football next season, the number of contracts expiring at the end of the season could be a potential saving grace. A reshuffle should be initiated, but not a drastic reshuffle, young players with measured composure, ambition, and most importantly passion need to be recruited next season. I'm not bothered if we finish 15th next season, if we show glimmering signs of defensive solidarity and the potential to grow then I'll be more than satisfied.

I'm feeling negative, you my fellow supporters are probably feeling negative. With change, we can look at the future with positivity, rather than utter helplessness.

A new philosophy needs to be addressed this January and beyond, without it, Evans, Clegg and Jewell will drive this club to the heights of self destruction. The great Sir Bobby Robson and Sir Alf Ramsey must be turning in their graves!

Good blog this, we all just need to be patient. Sure we have our bad runs like the one now but every club has one, sure as people will say that this it is 10 losses out of 13 but we need to stick with Jewell and his 30+ team.

Good points raised but i am of the belief that Paul Jewell already has that philosophy of the old ipswich way but has been left by keane with a team which has tried to buy there way into the prem.
This is why rather than doing what keane done spending stupid amount on players that lack the quality that the price demands has instead tried to plug the gaps with free transfers of players who should have the experince to allow us a firm position in the championship whilst Jewell identify targets who will take the club forward in the future without wasting funds.

Take note all of you who booed Liam Trotter after a few bad performances. If we are to return to building teams like we used to, youngsters will need patience and support to bed in and grow. Given the parlous state of the playing staff we might even have to take a relegation on the way, but have faith in the Ipswich philosophy. 30 and 50 years ago we had the best team in the country, and it wasn't by trying to buy the finished article like we have since Evans' arrival.

I do not disagree with anything in this blog. But it has to be said that the club is staring down the barrel of a gun. The situation is the worst in many a year. The reasons behind this crisis are various but it would not serve any purpose now to over analyse it. What we, as supporters, need urgently is for the Executive to coherently articulate what their plans are over the short, medium and longer term as well as demonstrating a real commitment to implementing measures which will turn things round. The prospect of relegation is real and the implications are horrendous. (I do not subscribe to the notion that relegation would allow us to re-group and come back stronger as per Norwich; it has never worked for us before). The Manager was recruited on the back of a CV containing sound credentials to get a club promoted; his past record does not suggest a hugely successful track record in avoiding relegation. The first question for the Executive to consider is therefore whether the right man is in charge and, secondly and more importantly, if there is anyone out there that can fulfil the longer term objectives more quickly or more effectively than the current incumbent. Normally I would be happy that CEO is overtly showing support for the Manager but in the current circumstances I feel that we are fiddling while Rome burns.

Easy - sack Paul 'negative' Jewell. Shocking, horrible, abysmal manager.
