Can anyone recommend any decent books about positive thinking/managing stress/generally being a bit happier?

There are loads on Amazon and not sure what to go for. Cheers.

But I imagine that includes the news and associated political comment shows. You need to start there. Turn it off.

It does but then we don't have the same views about the news and those shows so will place a different level of worth on them. I think they add value.

If you want a bit of motivation (as you seem to from previous posts) you could do a lot worse than reading this...

It's done in a humorous way of course, but there's some brilliant home truths in there.

Fair enough.

I still say turn off the TV for 2 weeks - see how you feel - I guarantee that you'll feel more positive and more energised - so long as you don't cheat.

Happier: Spy in the Wild - all about animals in their natural habitat with hidden cameras recording them. Really good viewing seeing how intelligent animals are.

Motivating: A Year to Change My Life - all about getting fit, losing weight and changing your life by eating better, getting plenty of exercise and often overcoming mental issues as well.

I don't watch soaps, reality trash tv, game shows, quiz shows etc etc.

I think the price has just gone up on that one, and to be honest it's hard going through the middle.

OK, you can watch "Spy in the Wild".

With regards to eating healthily, just buy meat from a butcher's, fish from a fish monger's and vegetables, fruits and nuts from a local green grocer. Teach yourself how to cook, or ask people on this site.

Go for a 30 minute walk every day of the week or an hour's walk 3 or 4 times a week.

Report back in 3 weeks.

I do know how to eat healthy and exercise. I just enjoy watching the transition. I'm not going to give tv up. If you thing that makes me an attention seeker that is fair enough. I just don't agree with the prescription as that isn't my problem.

i watched a few of those obese a year to save my life programmes, quite interesting, though how on earth do people let themselves get so fat ??

as ricky gervais said in one of his stand ups, getting obese doesn't happen all of a sudden, it is very much a gradual process, there are many opportunities to stop eating like a pig and to take more exercise, which in all honesty is very true

In virtually every case of extreme obesity there is an underlying problem where food is used as an emotional crutch. Most people use one of drugs, alcohol or smoking but food is also an option. It's a hard habit to break.

If you watch My 600 Life you will see a constant theme of people getting that big because they were abused, raped, beaten as a child, had a close family death, are hiding their true sexuality etc etc.

It's very easy to say eat less move more and that is the obvious solution but some form of counseling would be better for most obese people IMO alongside the diet/exercise.

Nope. I've read that 3 times and still can't find reference to drinking copious amounts of beer. Think you must have missed it out....

How many people do you know that don't watch more than one hour's TV a week?

But you're right, it should be common sense.

I started this thread to ask for book ideas. There was no attention seeking there. I don't wish to go into my issues on here to be honest. I just wanted a few techniques for when i'm in a particular situation.

Quite happy to let the thread die. Not waiting for people to say oh go on!
